JET-POWERED MOLECULAR HYDROGEN EMISSION FROM RADIO GALAXIES [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2010
H2 pure-rotational emission lines are detected from warm (100-1500 K) molecular gas in 17/55 (31% of) radio galaxies at redshift z<0.22 observed with the Spitzer IR Spectrograph. The summed H2 0-0 S(0)-S(3) line luminosities are L(H2)=7E38-2E42 erg/s, yielding warm H2 masses up to 2E10 Msun. These radio galaxies, of both FR radio morphological types,

Jet precession in active galaxies

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 1988
The formation and evolution of massive binary black holes in galactic nuclei are studied with respect to the loss-cone filling model for the fueling of massive black holes in AGN during the final stage of galaxy mergers. A relation between the precession period of the jet and the fueling rate of the central hole has been obtained.

The Jets in Radio Galaxies

open access: yes, 2020
This thesis describes two studies of extragalactic radio sources at high resolution and sensitivity. Most of the well-known facts about radio sources come from low-resolution imaging, despite the fact that much of the interesting physics (that of the jets and hotspots) occurs on scales that are small compared to the overall source size.

Spectral Structure in FR II Radio Galaxies and Jets [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2001
Using spectral tomography to separate overlapping spectral features in a sample of FRII radio galaxies, we find a variety of spatial/spectral features that are not easily described in the context of current models. In particular, we find mixtures of flat and steep spectrum features in the hot spot regions, and non-monotonic spectral index gradients ...

DISCOVERY OF A PSEUDOBULGE GALAXY LAUNCHING POWERFUL RELATIVISTIC JETS [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2016
ABSTRACT Supermassive black holes launching plasma jets at close to the speed of light, producing gamma-rays, have ubiquitously been found to be hosted by massive elliptical galaxies. Since elliptical galaxies are generally believed to be built through galaxy mergers, active galactic nuclei (AGN) launching relativistic jets are ...

Halo ejection in distant radio galaxies: jet feedback in massive galaxy formation

open access: yesAstrophysics and Space Science, 2007
We present results from a Keck optical and near IR spectroscopic study of the giant emission line halos of the z > 3 High Redshift Radio Galaxies (HiZRGs) 4C 41.17, 4C 60.07 and B2 0902+34. The outer regions of these halos show quiet kinematics with typical velocity dispersions of a few hundred km s^(−1) and velocity shears consistent with rotation ...
