Optimal Multitask Linear Regression and Contextual Bandits under Sparse Heterogeneity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
Large and complex datasets are often collected from several, possibly heterogeneous sources. Multitask learning methods improve efficiency by leveraging commonalities across datasets while accounting for possible differences among them. Here, we study multitask linear regression and contextual bandits under sparse heterogeneity, where the source/task ...

THE MOLARITY OF MOLECULAR THEORY AND THE MOLECULARITY OF MOLAR THEORY [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 2001
Dinsmoor (2001) rejects shock‐frequency reduction as a reinforcer for avoidance behavior, and considers this to be an invalidation of so‐called molar avoidance theory. This is a narrow view of operant avoidance theory, for which shock‐frequency reduction is by no means the only reinforcer.

Steric modulation of ionic currents in DNA translocation through nanopores [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Statistical Physics, Vol. 158, Isuue 5, 1181-1194 (2015), 2015
Ionic currents accompanying DNA translocation strongly depend on molarity of the electrolyte solution and the shape and surface charge of the nanopore. By means of the Poisson-Nernst-Planck equations it is shown how conductance is modulated by the presence of the DNA intruder and as a result of competing electrostatic and confinement factors.

Making tau amyloid models in vitro: a crucial and underestimated challenge

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This review highlights the challenges of producing in vitro amyloid assemblies of the tau protein. We review how accurately the existing protocols mimic tau deposits found in the brain of patients affected with tauopathies. We discuss the important properties that should be considered when forming amyloids and the benchmarks that should be used to ...

The solution supramolecular structure of α2 → 8 polysialic acid suggests a structural cause for its low immunogenicity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
α2 → 8 polysialic acid elicits poor immunogenicity. Small‐angle scattering shows a supramolecular structure with parallel‐chain binding, although in different forms at μm and mm calcium. The major histocompatibility complex requires molecular weights around 2000 Da to produce antibodies, and 2000 Da polysialic oligomers will bind in these structures ...

Targeted metabolomics reveals novel diagnostic biomarkers for colorectal cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study employed targeted metabolomic profiling to identify 302 distinct metabolites present in platelet‐rich plasma (PRP), revealing aberrant metabolic profiles amongst individuals diagnosed with colorectal cancer (CRC). Compared to carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and cancer antigen 19‐9 (CA199), our metabolite panel showed improved sensitivity ...

A Mixture of Exemplars Approach for Efficient Out-of-Distribution Detection with Foundation Models [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
One of the early weaknesses identified in deep neural networks trained for image classification tasks was their inability to provide low confidence predictions on out-of-distribution (OOD) data that was significantly different from the in-distribution (ID) data used to train them.

Isoprene and acetone concentration profiles during exercise on an ergometer [PDF]

open access: yesJ. Breath Res. 3, 027006, 16pp (2009), 2009
A real-time recording setup combining exhaled breath VOC measurements by proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS) with hemodynamic and respiratory data is presented. Continuous automatic sampling of exhaled breath is implemented on the basis of measured respiratory flow: a flow-controlled shutter mechanism guarantees that only end-tidal ...

Modified glass ionomer and orthodontic band: An interim alternative for the treatment of molar incisor hypomineralization. A case report.

open access: yesJournal of Oral Research, 2017
Introduction: Molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is a developmental condition resulting in defects in the enamel characterized by demarcated opacities mainly affecting first permanent molars and occasionally permanent incisors in 1 of every 6 ...

HDAC4 regulates apoptosis in Acan‐CreERT2;HDAC4d/d mice with osteoarthritis by downregulating ATF4

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Using the AcanCreERT2;HDAC4fl/fl genetic mouse model, we further investigated the role of histone deacetylase 4 (HDAC4) in chondrocyte apoptosis. We found that knocking down HDAC4 may be associated with chondrocyte apoptosis by upregulating the activating transcription factor 4 (ATF4)/CAAT/enhancer binding protein homologous (CHOP) signaling pathway ...
