Gamma-ray binaries : a bridge between Be stars and high energy astrophysics [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2014
Advances in X-ray and gamma-ray astronomy have opened a new window on our universe and revealed a wide variety of binaries composed of a compact object and a Be star. In Be X-ray binaries, a neutron star accretes the Be disk and truncates it through tidal interactions. Such systems have important X-ray outbursts, some related to the disk structure.

Be stars in X-ray binary systems [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 1999
This paper will review the status of our observations and understanding of Be stars in X-ray binary systems. In virtually all cases the binary partner to the Be star is a neutron star. The circumstellar disk provides the accretion fuel and hence stimulates the X-ray emission, whilst the neutron star provides a valuable probe of the environment around ...

Binaries with Compact Components: Theoretical and Observational Challenges [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2004
We report on recent progress in our theoretical understanding of X-ray binaries, which has largely been driven by new observations, and illustrate the interplay between theory and observations considering as examples intermediate-mass X-ray binaries, irradiation-driven evolution, ultraluminous X-ray sources and neutron stars with low-velocity kicks.

X-ray Gyrations of Eta Carinae, or, Is Presence of Evidence Evidence of Presence? [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2004
We review the properties of the variable X-ray emission from the extremely massive star Eta Carinae concentrating on the last X-ray minimum, and briefly consider the possible role of a binary companion star on the observational properties of the system.

X-ray polarization of accreting black holes: Cyg X-1 and Swift J1727.8-1613 [PDF]

open access: yesWDS'24 Proceedings of Contributed Papers, Physics (eds. J. Safrankova and J. Pavlu), Prague, Matfyzpress, pp. 178-184, 2024
The Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer is an X-ray observatory measuring the X-ray polarization in the 2-8 keV energy range. Highly sensitive to the system's geometry, X-ray polarization is a unique method to probe the structure of X-ray binaries. The Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer observed the High-Mass X-ray Binary Cygnus X-1 and the Low-Mass X ...
