Constraining gas motions in the Centaurus cluster using X-ray surface brightness fluctuations and metal diffusion [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
We compare two different methods of constraining the characteristic velocity and spatial scales of gas motions in the X-ray bright, nearby Centaurus cluster, using new deep (760ks) Chandra observations.

The Surface Brightness Fluctuation Survey of Galaxy Distances. II. Local and Large‐Scale Flows [PDF]

open access: green, 2000
We present results from the Surface Brightness Fluctuation (SBF) Survey for the distances to 300 early-type galaxies, of which approximately half are ellipticals.

Detection of Radial Surface Brightness Fluctuation and Color Gradients in elliptical galaxies with ACS [PDF]

open access: bronze, 2005
We study surface brightness fluctuations (SBF) in a sample of 8 elliptical galaxies using Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) Wide Field Channel (WFC) data drawn from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) archive.

Can AGN and galaxy clusters explain the surface brightness fluctuations of the cosmic X-ray background? [PDF]

open access: green, 2016
Fluctuations of the surface brightness of cosmic X-ray background (CXB) carry unique information about faint and low luminosity source populations, which is inaccessible for conventional large-scale structure (LSS) studies based on resolved sources.

Modelling of surface brightness fluctuation measurements [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics
Aims. The goal of this work is to scrutinise the surface brightness fluctuation (SBF) calculation methodology. We analysed the SBF derivation procedure, measured the accuracy of the fitted SBF under controlled conditions, retrieved the uncertainty associated with the variability of a system that is inherently stochastic, and studied the SBF reliability

Surface brightness fluctuations, tracers of stellar mass-loss? [PDF]

open access: bronzeProceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2009
AbstractWe present optical and IR integrated colors and SBF magnitudes, computed from stellar population synthesis models that include emission from the dusty envelopes surrounding mass-loosing TP-AGB stars. We explore the effects of varying the mass-loss rate by one order of magnitude around the fiducial value, modifying accordingly both the stellar ...

Cosmic distances from surface brightness fluctuations [PDF]

open access: bronzeProceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2012
AbstractHigh spatial-resolution measurements of surface brightness fluctuations (SBFs) with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) provide the most precise distances available to early-type galaxies beyond the Local Group. The observable SBF magnitude in a given bandpass is a basic property of any stellar system, corresponding to a ratio of the first and ...

The surface-brightness fluctuation distance of NGC 5128

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal, 1990
Observations are presented of the surface-brightness fluctuations and photometry of globular clusters in the interacting galaxy NGC 5128 (Centaurus A). It is found that the fluctuation apparent magnitudes are 26.08 and 28.12; the I band magnitude implies that NGC 5128 is 3.1 + or - 0.1 Mpc distant.

VLT optical BVR observations of two bright supernova Ia hosts in the Virgo cluster - Surface brightness fluctuation analysis [PDF]

open access: bronze, 2011
Aims. We study the characteristics of field stars in the two bright ellipticals NGC 4621 and NGC 4374 in the Virgo cluster to derive accurate distances and stellar population properties.
