123–321 models of classical novae [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics, 2020
Context.High-resolution spectroscopy has revealed large concentrations of CNO and sometimes other intermediate-mass elements (e.g., Ne, Na, Mg, or Al, for ONe novae) in the shells ejected during nova outbursts, suggesting that the solar composition material transferred from the secondary mixes with the outermost layers of the underlying white dwarf ...

Fixed points of 321-avoiding permutations [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the American Mathematical Society, 2018
We describe the distribution of the number and location of the fixed points of permu- tations that avoid the pattern 321 via a bijection with rooted plane trees on n + 1 vertices. Using the local limit theorem for Galton-Watson trees, we are able to give an explicit description of the limit of this distribution.

Rowmotion on 321-Avoiding Permutations

open access: yesThe Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 2023
We give a natural definition of rowmotion for $321$-avoiding permutations, by translating, through bijections involving Dyck paths and the Lalanne--Kreweras involution, the analogous notion for antichains of the positive root poset of type $A$. We prove that some permutation statistics, such as the number of fixed points, are homomesic under rowmotion,

Rationality for subclasses of 321-avoiding permutations [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Combinatorics, 2019
We prove that every proper subclass of the 321-avoiding permutations that is defined either by only finitely many additional restrictions or is well quasi-ordered has a rational generating function. To do so we show that any such class is in bijective correspondence with a regular language.

Pacific Equatorial Age Transect [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 320/321, "Pacific Equatorial Age Transect" (Sites U1331–U1338), was designed to recover a continuous Cenozoic record of the equatorial Pacific by coring above the paleoposition of the Equator at successive crustal ages on the Pacific plate.

Superfluous, Mischievous or Emancipating? Thailand’s Evolving Senate Today Thailands Oberhaus: Überflüssig, schädlich oder unabhängig?

open access: yesJournal of Current Southeast Asian Affairs, 2009
In Thailand’s emerging democracy, the Senate has played an often underestimated role. This study analyzes Thailand’s Upper House, examining its historical evolution until 2009. In particular, it focuses on the following questions.

Democracy as a Limiting Factor for Politicised Cultural Populism in Malawi Demokratie und politisierter Kulturpopulismus in Malawi

open access: yesAfrica Spectrum, 2009
Though Malawian democracy could still be described as in transition from authoritarianism, it has enabled an atmosphere for critical debate of and dissent against seemingly popular opinions, which was not possible during the authoritarian rule of former ...

Failed Presidencies: Identifying and Explaining a South American Anomaly Presidencias fallidas: identificando y explicando una anomalía sudamericana

open access: yesJournal of Politics in Latin America, 2009
Are presidential democracies inherently unstable and prone to breakdown? Recent work on Latin America suggests that the region has seen the emergence of a new kind of instability, where individual presidents do not manage to stay in office to the end of ...

The Mechanics of Regime Instability in Latin America Mecanismos de inestabilidad de régimen en América Latina

open access: yesJournal of Politics in Latin America, 2009
The paper is narrowly addressed to a single puzzle: How did it happen that countries that attempted to install democracy earlier enjoyed it less frequently?
