Large Covariance Matrix Estimation by Penalized Log‐Det Heuristics

open access: yesStatistical Analysis and Data Mining: An ASA Data Science Journal, Volume 19, Issue 5, October 2026.
ABSTRACT We study covariance estimation in high‐dimensional approximate factor models with a sparse residual covariance. The estimator combines a log‐det loss with nuclear‐norm and off‐diagonal ℓ1$$ {\mathrm{\ell}}_1 $$ penalties on a sample‐normalized covariance scale.

Squills vs. Hyacinths – A revised genus delimitation in Hyacinthinae (Hyacintheae, Scilloideae, Asparagaceae) based on phylogenomics

open access: yesTAXON, Volume 75, Issue 5, October 2026.
Abstract Scilla s.l. (Asparagaceae: Scilloideae) represents a notable Mediterranean geophyte radiation, yet genus delimitation in subtribe Hyacinthinae has long suffered from inconsistent and conflicting generic concepts. A limited set of informative morphological characters and recurrent shifts in circumscription have repeatedly hindered progress ...

An Ensemble Kalman Smoother for Online Paleoclimate Data Assimilation

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, Volume 18, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract An integrated hybrid ensemble Kalman smoother (IHEnKS) is proposed to optimally utilize proxy data from the past to the future for paleoclimate data assimilation (PDA). As an extension of the integrated hybrid ensemble Kalman filter, IHEnKS assimilates future proxies through cross‐time error covariances, which are estimated from an online PDA ...

Physical disability in the workplace: A career life cycle review

open access: yesApplied Psychology, Volume 75, Issue 5, October 2026.
Abstract This review examines how individuals with physical disabilities experience the career life cycle, with a central focus on how variability in physical disability visibility shapes the accommodations provided to these individuals and their broader career experiences.

Does disability trump family background? Determinants of electoral participation among young individuals with intellectual disability

open access: yesPolitical Psychology, Volume 47, Issue 5, October 2026.
Abstract Systematic differences of electoral participation between various social groups indicate crucial constraints of comprehensive democratic inclusion. Yet, there is a dearth of research on electoral participation among individuals with intellectual disability (ID), whose participation rates are considerably lower than among non‐ID citizens.

Lipschitz‐free spaces over uniformly discrete metric spaces are 3‐Schur

open access: yesBulletin of the London Mathematical Society, Volume 58, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract We prove that the Lipschitz‐free space over any uniformly discrete metric space has the 3‐Schur property.

Hybrid Coupling With Operator Inference and the Overlapping Schwarz Alternating Method

open access: yesInternational Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering, Volume 127, Issue 17, 15 September 2026.
ABSTRACT This paper presents a hybrid approach for coupling subdomain‐local, nonintrusive Operator Inference (OpInf) reduced order models (ROMs) with each other and with subdomain‐local, high‐fidelity full order models (FOMs) using the overlapping Schwarz alternating method (O‐SAM).

Skew-Linked Partitions and a Representation-Theoretic Model for k-Schur Functions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
In 2001, Lapointe, Lascoux, and Morse discovered a class of symmetric functions called k-Schur functions. These functions have many properties similar to Schur functions and were motivated by a conjectured refinement of the Macdonald positivity ...

ON SOME FACTORIZATION FORMULAS OF $K$-$k$-SCHUR FUNCTIONS (Combinatorics of Lie Type) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
We give some new formulas about factorizations of K-ksim Schur functions g_{$lambda$}^{(k)}, analogous to the k-rectangle factorization formula s_{(t^{k+1-mathrm{t}})cup $lambda$}^{(k)}= s_{(t^{k+1-t})}^{(k)}s_{$lambda$}^{(k)} of k-Schur functions ...
