On the Peculiar Properties of Extremely Low Frequency Lightning Generated Whistlers Detected at Low Earth Orbit Altitudes Close to the Magnetic Equator

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 10, 28 May 2026.
Abstract Lightning strikes generate broadband electromagnetic signals. At Extremely Low Frequencies (ELF), these signals partly leak into the ionosphere and produce so‐called Lightning Generated (LG) whistlers that the Absolute Scalar Magnetometers on board the ESA Swarm satellites can detect.

Evaluation of Air Temperature Uncertainty Estimates of the NOAA/CIRES/DOE 20th Century Reanalysis Over Greenland

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 10, 28 May 2026.
Abstract Due to the high sparsity of in situ observations, reanalysis data sets are often the only source of climate information for the 20th century, particularly in the Arctic. The NOAA/CIRES/DOE 20th Century Reanalysis v3 provides uncertainty estimates, whose reliability we evaluate by comparing with non‐assimilated daily and monthly historical air ...

Internal Wave Characteristics in the Andaman Sea: New Insights From SWOT Observations

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 10, 28 May 2026.
Abstract High‐resolution, repeat‐pass Sea Surface Height Anomaly (SSHA) observations from the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite are used to investigate Internal Solitary Waves (ISW) in the Andaman Sea over a one‐year period starting in July 2023. SWOT captured surface signatures of high‐amplitude ISW, with SSHA exceeding 20 cm.

Backscattering by Particles of Sizes <0.2 μm in Seawater

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 10, 28 May 2026.
Abstract We measured the angular scattering functions at 517 nm in different size fractions, including bulk and very small particles (VSP for diameters <0.2 μm), in a variety of waters ranging from coasts to open oceans and from surface to depths as deep as 3,000 m.

Deep Learning Enabled Ultrafast Optical Spectral Phase Retrieval via Unbalanced‐Intensity Autocorrelation

open access: yesNanophotonics, Volume 15, Issue 10, 27 May 2026.
Phase‐enabled nonlinear gating with unbalanced intensity (PENGUIN) enables reconstruction of the complete ultrafast optical field from one‐dimensional nonlinear interferometric autocorrelation traces. Combined with deep learning, the DeepPENGUIN framework enables real‐time spectral phase retrieval without spectrally resolved detection or iterative ...

Interaction of Dirac δ$$ \delta $$‐Waves in the Inviscid Levine and Sleeman Chemotaxis Model

open access: yesMathematical Methods in the Applied Sciences, Volume 49, Issue 7, Page 6492-6506, 15 May 2026.
ABSTRACT This article investigates interactions of δ$$ \delta $$‐shock waves in the inviscid Levine and Sleeman chemotaxis model ut−λ(uv)x=0$$ {u}_t-\lambda {(uv)}_x=0 $$, vt−ux=0$$ {v}_t-{u}_x=0 $$. The analysis employs a distributional product and a solution concept that extends the classical solution concept.
