Towards integrated control of varroa: effect of variation in hygienic behaviour among honey bee colonies on mite population increase and deformed wing virus incidence [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Hygienic behaviour in the honey bee, Apis mellifera, is the uncapping and removal of dead, diseased or infected brood from sealed cells by worker bees. We determined the effect of hygienic behaviour on varroa population growth and incidence of deformed ...

Redescription of Hemileius suramericanus (Acari, Oribatida, Scheloribatidae) with comments about Neotropical congeneric species [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
This paper represents the first redescription of Hemileius suramericanus (Hammer, 1958) (Oribatida, Scheloribatidae). Morphological and chaetotactic details are added to original Hammer's description.

Species Distribution Models and Ecological Suitability Analysis for Potential Tick Vectors of Lyme Disease in Mexico

open access: yesJournal of Tropical Medicine, Volume 2012, Issue 1, 2012., 2012
Species distribution models were constructed for ten Ixodes species and Amblyomma cajennense for a region including Mexico and Texas. The model was based on a maximum entropy algorithm that used environmental layers to predict the relative probability of presence for each taxon.

Aeroallergens and Asthma

open access: yesCanadian Respiratory Journal, Volume 1, Issue 4, Page 248-256, 1994., 1994
The main aeroallergens in both the indoor and outdoor environment that have been implicated in the pathogenesis of allergic asthma are reviewed. Pollen and fungal spores are important outdoor aeroallergens that cause sensitization in atopic subjects, leading to rhinitis and asthma in a proportion of the sensitized subjects.

Chrysoperla externa (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) as a Potential Biological Control Agent of Raoiella indica (Acari: Tenuipalpidae)

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, Volume 174, Issue 4, Page 335-342, April 2026.
First and third instar Chrysoperla externa showed efficient predatory capacity at low R. indica density, but second instar C. externa exhibits a density‐dependent predatory ability. The lacewing C. externa shows promise as a biocontrol agent for R. indica in coconut because it consumed 8362 R. indica females across all its larval instars.

The Search for Ixodes dammini and Borrelia burgdorferi in Nova Scotia

open access: yesCanadian Journal of Infectious Diseases and Medical Microbiology, Volume 3, Issue 5, Page 224-230, 1992., 1991
Twenty‐four Ixodes dammini ticks (23 adults and one nymph) have been recovered in Nova Scotia since 1984. There has not been a systematic search for larvae and none has been identified. The recovery of the nymph from a road‐killed yellow throat bird, Geothypis trichas, in late May 1990 supports the contention that migrating birds are bringing deer ...

Commodity risk assessment of Petunia spp. and Calibrachoa spp. unrooted cuttings from Costa Rica

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 22, Issue 11, November 2024.
Abstract The European Commission requested the EFSA Panel on Plant Health to evaluate the probability of entry of pests (likelihood of pest freedom at entry), including both regulated and non‐regulated pests, associated with unrooted cuttings of the genera Petunia and Calibrachoa produced under physical isolation in Costa Rica.
