Dwarf Minke Whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) Mother and Calf Ecology in East and Southern Australia

open access: yesMarine Mammal Science, Volume 42, Issue 3, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Knowledge of mother–calf pairs, migratory patterns, female reproductive cycles, and birth‐year calf development are all essential for understanding risks in these critical life stages and monitoring little‐known dwarf minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) populations.

Multi‐Country‐Multi‐City Characterisation of Heat Stress and Exposure in Africa

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, Volume 46, Issue 8, 30 June 2026.
This study provides the first continent‐wide, grid‐specific assessment of heat stress trends in Africa, revealing a sharp rise in multi‐scale extreme heat episodes and shifting population exposure. Findings highlight urgent implications for urban planning and climate adaptation.

Global Hotspots of Stalling Extratropical Cyclones

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 11, 16 June 2026.
Abstract Extratropical cyclones (ETCs) are primary drivers of extreme weather in the mid‐to‐high latitudes. We introduce a new classification of particularly impactful events—“stalling” ETCs—defined by slow movement combined with intense precipitation. Using cyclone tracking data, we find that stalling ETCs cluster systematically along the east coasts ...

Zonal metal ion transport’s contribution to sporadic E layer occurrence in the austral summer southern hemisphere

open access: yesEarth, Planets and Space
We investigate the cause of the spatial distribution of sporadic E (Es) layer occurrences in the austral summer Southern Hemisphere using a numerical model that incorporates metal ion dynamics.

Atmospheric Dust Transport to High‐Elevation Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica, Modulated by Cyclonic Circulation, the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, and Source Emissions

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 11, 16 June 2026.
Abstract The dependence of aeolian dust transport on atmospheric circulation patterns allows dust preserved in Antarctic ice cores to serve as a proxy for past circulation variability. Here, we investigate dust transport to high‐elevation Dronning Maud Land (DML) in Antarctica through analysis of the 1300‐year‐old ISOL‐ICE ice core dust record together
