Evaluating the influence of marine protected areas on surf zone fish

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 38, Issue 6, December 2024.
Abstract Marine protected areas (MPAs) globally serve conservation and fisheries management goals, generating positive effects in some marine ecosystems. Surf zones and sandy beaches, critical ecotones bridging land and sea, play a pivotal role in the life cycles of numerous fish species and serve as prime areas for subsistence and recreational fishing.

Diversity and dominance in bird assemblages across habitats in the Ñeembucú wetlands complex

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 56, Issue 5, September 2024.
We analyzed how the composition of neotropical bird assemblages vary among habitats (riparian forests, natural grasslands, savannas, and anthropized sites) in the Ñeembucú Wetlands Complex, the largest wetland system in Paraguay. We found a high bird richness (209 species) that contrasted with a pattern of dominance by a small set of 16 species that ...

Testing for concordance between predicted species richness, past prioritization, and marine protected area designations in the western Indian Ocean

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 38, Issue 4, August 2024.
Abstract Scientific advances in environmental data coverage and machine learning algorithms have improved the ability to make large‐scale predictions where data are missing. These advances allowed us to develop a spatially resolved proxy for predicting numbers of tropical nearshore marine taxa.

Range‐wide intraspecific variation reflects past adaptation to climate in a gypsophile Mediterranean shrub

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 112, Issue 7, Page 1533-1549, July 2024.
Despite strong specialization to gypsum soils, past divergent selection related to climatic gradients has driven adaptive population differentiation in Lepidium subulatum. All populations showed high but similar plasticity to drought, indicating that selection did not act against plasticity in harsh environmental conditions.

How to count bird calls? Vocal activity indices may provide different insights into bird abundance and behaviour depending on species traits

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 6, Page 1071-1083, June 2024.
Abstract Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) has become an important tool for surveying birds, and there is a growing demand for approaches to obtain abundance and behavioural information from PAM recordings. Changes in bird populations have been assessed by counting recorded calls and calculating the vocal activity rate (VAR, i.e.

Use of bird‐borne radar to examine shearwater interactions with legal and illegal fisheries

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 38, Issue 3, June 2024.
Abstract Seabirds interact with fishing vessels to consume fishing discards and baits, sometimes resulting in incidental capture (bycatch) and the death of the bird, which has clear conservation implications. To understand seabird–fishery interactions at large spatiotemporal scales, researchers are increasing their use of simultaneous seabird and ...
