Resistance and Tolerance to Imperfectly Specialized Parasites: Milkweed Butterflies and Their Protozoan Parasites

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 3, March 2025.
This study explores the causes and outcomes of cross‐species parasite transmission, focusing on two congeneric and sympatric butterfly host species: monarchs (Danaus plexippus) and queens (D. gilippus), and their respective parasite strains (Ophryocystis elektroscirrha and similar parasites).

A ketogenic‐promoting beverage acutely elevates cardiac function and myocardial blood flow compared to placebo in adults: A cardiac MRI investigation

open access: yesPhysiological Reports, Volume 13, Issue 6, March 2025.
Abstract Increasing evidence suggests cardiac function improves in healthy and failing hearts alongside circulating ketones (1–4 mM). This study characterized cardiac function and blood flow responses to a ketogenic beverage compared to a volume/calorie matched placebo with repeated imaging over 120 min.

Phenotypic and oncological insights in ANNA1 autoimmunity: Age stratification and biomarker analysis

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, Volume 12, Issue 2, Page 280-290, February 2025.
Abstract Objective To describe the phenotypes, oncological associations, biomarker profiles, and outcomes across different age groups in patients with ANNA1 (anti‐Hu) autoimmunity. Methods A retrospective review of patients with ANNA1‐IgG in serum/CSF between January 1, 2001, and December 31,2019 was performed.

Development of individualized risk assessment models for predicting post‐traumatic epilepsy 1 and 2 years after moderate‐to‐severe traumatic brain injury: A traumatic brain injury model system study

open access: yesEpilepsia, Volume 66, Issue 2, Page 482-498, February 2025.
Abstract Objective Although traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post‐traumatic epilepsy (PTE) are common, there are no prospective models quantifying individual epilepsy risk after moderate‐to‐severe TBI (msTBI). We generated parsimonious prediction models to quantify individual epilepsy risk between acute inpatient rehabilitation for individuals 2 years ...

Adhesion of Catechol‐Functionalized Linear‐Dendritic Block Copolymers: Dendritic Effect, Self‐Assembly, and Bioadhesion

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, Volume 35, Issue 3, January 15, 2025.
Catechol‐functionalized Linear‐Dendritic Block Copolymers (LDBCs) are synthesized based on polyether linear polymers and Bis‐MPA dendrons. They show high adhesion on aluminum substrates with a clear positive dendritic effect: G2 > G1 > G0. Thanks to the formation of hydrogels, Pluronic F‐127 based LDBCs displayed effective adhesion on porcine skin ...

The Efficient Integration of Dust and Numerical Weather Prediction for Renewable Energy Applications

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, Volume 17, Issue 1, January 2025.
Abstract The growing demand for renewable energy underscores the importance of accurate dust forecasting in regions with abundant wind and solar resources. However, leading real‐time global numerical weather prediction (NWP) models often lack dust modules due to computational constraints.

Probabilistic Identification of Debris‐Flow Pathways in Mountain Fans Within a Stochastic Framework

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Earth Surface, Volume 129, Issue 12, December 2024.
Abstract Debris flows are solid‐liquid mixtures originating in the upper part of mountain basins and routing downstream along incised channels. When the channel incises an open fan, the debris flow leaves the active channel and propagates downstream along a new pathway. This phenomenon is called an avulsion.

Workers' moral hazard and private insurer effort in disability insurance

open access: yesJournal of Risk and Insurance, Volume 91, Issue 4, Page 1049-1088, December 2024.
Abstract While it is well known that supplementary private Disability Insurance (DI) has the potential to increase workers' moral hazard, the extra coverage may also increase incentives for private insurers to reduce caseloads by means of prevention and reintegration activities.

A Simple Model for the Evaporation of Hydrometeors and Their Isotopes

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 129, Issue 22, 28 November 2024.
Abstract Cloud condensation and hydrometeor evaporation fractionate stable isotopes of water, enriching liquid with heavy isotopes; whereupon updrafts, downdrafts, and rain vertically redistribute water and its isotopes in the lower troposphere.
