Abalone Mortality Associated With Hypoxia in Tidepools During a Summer Heatwave

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 8, August 2026.
Abalone (Haliotis roei) inhabit tidepools on intertidal platforms. During heatwaves and periods of low tide, water exchange in tidepools ceases. While temperatures in tidepools remain constant, oxygen levels are significantly reduced. Abalone mortality in tidepools is associated with oxygen depletion rather than thermal stress.
