Effects of Roads and Traffic on Wildlife Populations and Landscape Function Road Ecology is Moving toward Larger Scales [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Road ecology has developed into a significant branch of ecology with steady growth in the number of refereed journal articles, books, conferences, symposia, and “best practice” guidelines being produced each year. The main objective of this special issue

Variation in population size, nest distribution, colony extent, and timing of movements at the largest known parrot colony

open access: yesWildlife Biology, Volume 2025, Issue 3, May 2025.
Psittaciformes are among the most threatened birds, and population size and trend estimates are needed to aid conservation. The burrowing parrot Cyanoliseus patagonus is undergoing substantial changes in its population size, due to habitat degradation, trapping for the pet trade, and persecution as crop pest.

Addressing Challenges in Simulating Inter–Annual Variability of Gross Primary Production

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, Volume 17, Issue 5, May 2025.
Abstract A long‐standing challenge in studying the global carbon cycle has been understanding the factors controlling inter–annual variation (IAV) of carbon fluxes, and improving their representations in existing biogeochemical models. Here, we compared an optimality‐based model and a semi‐empirical light use efficiency model to understand how current ...

Pollinator-attracting semiochemicals of the wasp-flower Epipactis helleborine [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The orchid genus Epipactis is represented by 25 species in Europe (Richards 1982). Epipactis helleborine (L.) Crantz is the most common and widely distributed species of the genus (Wiefelspütz 1970), and is a prime example for wasp-flowers, because it is

Emergence of a Resource Acquisition Trade‐off at the Community Scale during Environmental Change

open access: yesEcology Letters, Volume 28, Issue 4, April 2025.
A four‐decadal cycle of eutrophication and subsequent re‐oligotrophication in Lake Constance led to the emergence of a strong trade‐off between phosphate and light affinity. We derive an explanation for the emergence of this trade‐off from resource ratio theory and discuss the relevance of this novel concept for trait‐based ecology.
