Emergent Relationships Between the Functional Diversity of Marine Planktonic Copepods and Ecosystem Functioning in the Global Ocean

We evaluate how the diversity and functional traits of copepods—tiny crustaceans that constitute the majority of marine zooplankton—relate to key processes in the oceans such as the production of plankton biomass and how it sinks at depth. The study found that a few dominant copepod species disproportionately shape these processes.
