پژوهشنامۀ انتقادی متون و برنامههای علوم انسانی, 2019 هراکلیت افسوسی (550-480 پ م) از دیرباز فیلسوف تاریک نامیده میشود. نخستینبار تیمون اهل فیلیونت، طنزنویس قرن سوم پیش از میلاد، سبک بیان هراکلیت را «معمّاوش»نامید. صفت سبک، سپس، به صاحب سبک داده شد. سرانجام هراکلیت فیلسوف «تاریک»نام گرفت.
