An inducible CRISPR‐Kill system for temporally controlled cell type‐specific cell ablation in Arabidopsis thaliana

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 239, Issue 5, Page 2041-2052, September 2023., 2023
Summary The application of the CRISPR/Cas system as a biotechnological tool for genome editing has revolutionized plant biology. Recently, the repertoire was expanded by CRISPR‐Kill, enabling CRISPR/Cas‐mediated tissue engineering through genome elimination by tissue‐specific expression.

A starting guide to root ecology: strengthening ecological concepts and standardising root classification, sampling, processing and trait measurements

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 232, Issue 3, Page 973-1122, November 2021., 2021
Summary In the context of a recent massive increase in research on plant root functions and their impact on the environment, root ecologists currently face many important challenges to keep on generating cutting‐edge, meaningful and integrated knowledge.

Directional auxin fluxes in plants by intramolecular domain–domain coevolution of PIN auxin transporters

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 227, Issue 5, Page 1406-1416, September 2020., 2020
Summary Morphogenesis and adaptive tropic growth in plants depend on gradients of the phytohormone auxin, mediated by the membrane‐based PIN‐FORMED (PIN) auxin transporters. PINs localize to a particular side of the plasma membrane (PM) or to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) to directionally transport auxin and maintain intercellular and intracellular ...

Gene expression atlas for the food security crop cassava

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 213, Issue 4, Page 1632-1641, March 2017., 2017
Summary Cassava (Manihot esculenta) feeds c. 800 million people world‐wide. Although this crop displays high productivity under drought and poor soil conditions, it is susceptible to disease, postharvest deterioration and the roots contain low nutritional content.

SWEET1‐mediated glucose transport is crucial for energy availability in Arabidopsis

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 249, Issue 4, Page 1816-1830, February 2026.
Summary The stress‐responsive hormone abscisic acid (ABA) is known for its inhibitory effects on various physiological processes, including seed germination, often resulting in energy deprivation. Interestingly, ABA‐induced germination inhibition can be alleviated by exogenous glucose (Glc), mimicking a functional interplay between ABA and sugar ...

Cytokinin‐induced promotion of root meristem size in the fern Azolla supports a shoot‐like origin of euphyllophyte roots

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 209, Issue 2, Page 705-720, January 2016., 2016
Summary The phytohormones cytokinin and auxin orchestrate the root meristem development in angiosperms by determining embryonic bipolarity. Ferns, having the most basal euphyllophyte root, form neither bipolar embryos nor permanent embryonic primary roots but rather an adventitious root system.

複層林における樹下植栽の生長について [PDF]

open access: yes, 1988

Exploring the importance of aromatic plants' extrafloral volatiles for pollinator attraction

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 248, Issue 2, Page 517-528, October 2025.
Summary Aromatic plants occur in many plant lineages and have widespread ethnobiological significance. Yet, the ecological significance and evolutionary origins of aromatic volatile emissions remain uncertain. Aromatic emissions have been implicated in defensive interactions but may also have other important functions.

AtMYB93 is a novel negative regulator of lateral root development in Arabidopsis

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 203, Issue 4, Page 1194-1207, September 2014., 2014
Summary Plant root system plasticity is critical for survival in changing environmental conditions. One important aspect of root architecture is lateral root development, a complex process regulated by hormone, environmental and protein signalling pathways. Here we show, using molecular genetic approaches, that the MYB transcription factor AtMYB93 is a
