黑长臂猿是国家一级重点保护动物,栖息于海南省昌江县霸王岭的热带森林中。海南黑冠长臂猿雄性全身毛色为黑色,雌性为黄色但头顶有一小片圆形黑毛,与云南及东南亚国家热带原始森林中的黑长臂猿种群的雌性通体黄色稍有不同,故一些专家把在海南栖息的长臂猿称为黑冠长臂猿,列为黑长臂猿的一个亚种。
