Scaling from microsite to landscape to resolve litter decomposition dynamics in globally extensive drylands

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Decomposition is the transformation of dead organic matter into its inorganic constituents. In most biomes, decomposition rates can be accurately predicted with simple mathematical models, but these models have long under‐predicted decomposition in globally extensive ...

Organ‐specific ozone and nitrogen legacies strengthen substrate control over litter decomposition

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Elevated tropospheric ozone (O3) and nitrogen (N) deposition are concurrent atmospheric changes that strongly influence terrestrial carbon cycling, yet their combined effects on below‐ground decomposition remain poorly understood.

Conservative roots confer a larger microbial carbon pump efficacy than acquisitive roots by regulating microbial life‐history strategy

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Root activity creates unique microbial hotspots in the rhizosphere by influencing the metabolic activities of surrounding soil microorganisms, profoundly regulating the dynamics of soil organic carbon (SOC). However, how root economic strategies affect the formation and

Alleviation of phosphorus rather than nitrogen limitation driven by permafrost and landscape effects on Dahurian larch forests

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Permafrost thaw is reshaping nutrient dynamics in boreal forests, but its impacts on tree nutrient limitation and functional strategies remain poorly understood. Clarifying these responses is crucial for predicting the response of boreal forests to climate change.

Inferring alternative ecosystem states with field survey data

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, EarlyView.
Abstract Many ecosystems potentially exhibit alternative stable states, where distinct states can coexist under identical environmental conditions. While simulation models have generated key hypotheses in alternative stable states theory, they often rely on scale‐free parameters disconnected from real ecosystems.

Evaluating synthetic substitutes to reduce illegal harvesting and support species recovery

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Providing synthetic substitutes is a widely promoted strategy to shift consumer demand away from wildlife products derived from threatened species. Yet, there is little evidence on whether product substitution prevents illegal or unsustainable harvesting and contributes to the recovery of threatened populations.

Uncovering correlates of decline and critical refuges for a threatened terrestrial mammal

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Globally, the geographic ranges of numerous species are contracting. Identifying spatiotemporal patterns of threat impact can illuminate why species decline in some parts of their range but persist in others. We developed a correlative approach to identify species’ response thresholds and locate ecological refuge areas associated with ...

Reconceptualising Motivation as Material‐Semiotic Entanglements: Translanguaging in Graduate TESOL Education

open access: yesInternational Journal of Applied Linguistics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Multilingual students in Anglophone universities often operate in survival mode. While translanguaging supports learning, critical gaps remain in understanding how translanguaging pedagogies transform and sustain motivation in English‐dominant contexts.

The Development and Validation of the Chinese Vocabulary Levels Test

open access: yesInternational Journal of Applied Linguistics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In response to the increasing need for effective Chinese vocabulary assessments, this study developed the Chinese Vocabulary Levels Test (CVLT), a test designed for intermediate‐level Chinese as a second or foreign language (CSL/FL) learners, based on the vocabulary lists (levels 4–6) from the Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for ...

车顶用柱式复合绝缘子风载下的试验与分析

open access: yesDianci bileiqi, 2007
