, 1994 劉紹銘教授的求學和寫作的過程充滿艱辛。小學畢業他就當印刷學徒，一邊工作一邊讀書看報，並開始寫作投稿。一九五六年他到台灣大學讀書，他靠寫稿維生，他替《工商日報》、《中央日報》、《聯合報》等報紙寫小說。一九五九年他與同學辦《現代文學》雜誌，也寫作投稿，他的創作就由通俗文學轉向純文學。畢業後他回港在友聯出版社當翻譯，後來赴美留學。劉紹銘有不少譯作，最初翻譯的視乎讀書和教書的需要，將沒有翻譯的著作翻成英文或中文。他形容翻譯是「借來的生命」，翻譯與創作並不衝突。他說他寫作需要吸收新的知識，而翻譯正好相輔相承 ...
