Mechanisms of bariatric surgery for weight loss and diabetes remission

open access: yesJournal of Diabetes, Volume 15, Issue 9, Page 736-752, September 2023., 2023
Highlights Controversial changes in intestinal hormones after bariatric surgery (BS) were summarized. The changes of signaling proteins involved in insulin resistance and the newly proposed changes in growth differentiation factor 15, exosomes, and extracellular vesicles after BS were elucidated.

Association between follicle‐stimulating hormone and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in postmenopausal women with type 2 diabetes mellitus

open access: yesJournal of Diabetes, Volume 15, Issue 8, Page 640-648, August 2023., 2023
Highlights In Chinese postmenopausal women with type 2 diabetes mellitus, serum follicle‐stimulating hormone levels were negatively and independently associated with the prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Metabolic conditions, including overweight/obesity, central obesity, hyperuricemia, hypertension, and dyslipidemia did not interact with

Association of gamma‐glutamyl transferase concentrations with all‐cause and cause‐specific mortality in Chinese adults with type 2 diabetes

open access: yesJournal of Diabetes, Volume 15, Issue 8, Page 674-684, August 2023., 2023
Highlights In people with type 2 diabetes, the risk of all‐cause, cardiovascular disease, and cancer mortality increased with higher gamma‐glutamyl transferase (GGT) concentrations. Stronger effects of GGT levels and all‐cause mortality were observed in the group with body mass index <25 kg/m2 and those with dyslipidemia.

Interventional metabology: A review of bariatric arterial embolization and endovascular denervation for treating metabolic disorders

open access: yesJournal of Diabetes, Volume 15, Issue 8, Page 665-673, August 2023., 2023
Highlights Interventional techniques offer novel therapeutic approaches for metabolic disorders such as obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus, with advantages such as less invasiveness, fewer potential complications, and lower costs. By embolizing specific arteries feeding ghrelin‐producing cells, bariatric arterial embolization not only promotes weight

The association between daytime napping and risk of type 2 diabetes is modulated by inflammation and adiposity: Evidence from 435 342 UK‐Biobank participants

open access: yesJournal of Diabetes, Volume 15, Issue 6, Page 496-507, June 2023., 2023
Highlights Using a large‐scale prospective population‐based cohort study, we found that a higher frequency of daytime napping is associated with an increased risk of incident type 2 diabetes (T2D), and such relations are modified by body fat percentage (BFP) and C‐reactive protein (CRP) levels.

Association of obesity under different metabolic status with adverse outcomes in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia: A retrospective cohort study

open access: yesJournal of Diabetes, Volume 15, Issue 5, Page 436-447, May 2023., 2023
Highlights To our knowledge, our study is the first to date to investigate the association between metabolically defined obesity and adverse outcomes in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Metabolic abnormalities were associated with adverse outcomes in patients with CML, irrespective of obesity status.

Sleeve gastrectomy improved microvascular phenotypes from obesity cohort, detected with optical coherence tomography angiography

open access: yesJournal of Diabetes, Volume 15, Issue 4, Page 313-324, April 2023., 2023
Highlights Different microvascular phenotypes were detected by noninvasive optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in metabolically healthy obesity and metabolic syndrome patients. Baseline blood pressure and insulin status may be key determinants for vascular benefit from bariatric surgery.

The Association of Retinal age gap with metabolic syndrome and inflammation

open access: yesJournal of Diabetes, Volume 15, Issue 3, Page 237-245, March 2023., 2023
Highlights Retinal age gap is a non‐invasive and cost‐effective aging biomarker. Retinal age gap was significantly associated with metabolic syndrome and inflammation. Retinal age gap could be potentially used as a screening tool for metabolic syndrome in large populations.

A novel index, Chinese visceral adiposity index is closely associated with urinary albumin‐creatinine ratio in Chinese community adults, especially in hypertensive or hyperglycemic population: Results from the REACTION study

open access: yesJournal of Diabetes, Volume 14, Issue 12, Page 792-805, December 2022., 2022
Highlights This is the first large‐sample, multicenter study of the relationship between Chinese Visceral Adiposity Index (CVAI) and urinary albumin to creatinine ratio (UACR) in Chinese community adults. CVAI and UACR were significantly associated in both genders. At higher CVAI levels, the population with prediabetes, diabetes, and hypertension has a

Obesity mediates the opposite association of education and diabetes in Chinese men and women: Results from the REACTION study

open access: yesJournal of Diabetes, Volume 14, Issue 11, Page 739-748, November 2022., 2022
Highlights The association between education level and diabetes in Chinese adults is positive in men but negative in women. Obesity is the major mediator underlying the gender disparity in the association between education and diabetes. Combating obesity may help address the burden of diabetes across education levels in both genders.
