Changes of Potential Suitable Areas for Lynx Under Climate Change in Mohe Area, Daxing'anling Mountains, China

open access: yesWildlife Letters, EarlyView.
Climate change drives shifts in suitable habitats for Eurasian lynx and its prey (hare, roe deer) in Mohe, Daxing'anling Mountains. Under RCP scenarios, moderate warming (RCP4.5) promotes substantial habitat expansion, while high‐emission conditions (RCP8.5) lead to strong expansion in the 2050s but slower gains and partial contraction by the 2070s ...

Anecdotes or Ecological Patterns: Symbiotic Foraging Behaviors in Coyotes and Badgers

open access: yesWildlife Letters, EarlyView.
Using a 3‐year, broad‐scale camera‐trap network in western Kansas, we tested whether coyotes and American badgers exhibit spatiotemporal patterns consistent with coordinated hunting. Despite high diel activity overlap, detection‐conditioned co‐detections occurred far less frequently than expected under independence, and short‐term temporal sequencing ...

Local Ecological Knowledge Reveals the Distribution of Cryptic Nocturnal Wildlife

open access: yesWildlife Letters, EarlyView.
Many nocturnal animals are difficult to study because they are rarely seen, including nocturnal primates, galagos and pottos, in West Africa. Working with over 600 people in 52 villages in southern Guinea‐Bissau, we found that communities frequently recognized galagos by their red eyeshine and distinctive calls, while pottos were not known.

Movement and Space Use Patterns of the Beale's Eyed Turtle (Sacalia bealei) Suggest Sensitivity to Environmental Changes and Poaching

open access: yesWildlife Letters, EarlyView.
Using radiotelemetry, we found that the movement and home range of the endangered Sacalia bealei varied significantly across reproductive classes and seasons, with males exhibiting greater movement than females during wet and mating seasons. The species exhibits strong aquatic dependence, favoring deep pools interspaced among riffle‐pool sequences ...

Jaguar Densities and Land Cover Change in a Multi‐Use Landscape: A 10‐Year Comparison in the Colombian Llanos

open access: yesWildlife Letters, EarlyView.
We used spatially explicit capture‐recapture to estimate jaguar densities in a private reserve in the Colombian Llanos and quantified land cover change in and around the reserve from 2014 to 2024. Densities increased 22% since 2014, while disturbed land cover increased by 39%–54% around the reserve depending on buffer distance. Our study indicates that

Conflict Social Networks of Critically Endangered Alpine Musk Deer in Captivity and Relationships With Fecal Steroid Hormones

open access: yesWildlife Letters, EarlyView.
We conducted a grouping study on 52 adult musk deer to investigate whether group sex composition modulates aggressive behavior and stress response in captive musk deer. We found that the conflict interactions of all‐male groups were significantly more than those of mixed groups, and compared with the mixed groups, the conflict interactions of all‐male ...

Wild Pigs (Sus scrofa) Stand Their Ground: Investigating Flight Response, or Lack Thereof, to Perceived Predation Risk

open access: yesWildlife Letters, EarlyView.
We used automated behavioral response systems (ABRs) to assess invasive wild pig (Sus scrofa) behavioral response to four auditory playbacks: humans, coyote vocalizations (Canis latrans), pigs in distress, and barred owl (Strix varia) calls. Wild pigs had a significant flight response to human playbacks, but 68% of pigs did not flee.
