Crystallization and preliminary crystallographic analysis of dUTPase from the helper phage Φ11 of Staphylococcus aureus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Staphylococcus aureus superantigen-carrying pathogenicity islands (SaPIs) have a determinant role in spreading virulence genes among bacterial populations that constitute a major health hazard.

ZDHHC18‐Mediated Palmitoylation of ORF3a Promotes SARS‐CoV‐2 Pathogenesis by Antagonizing TRIM16‐Mediated Ubiquitination and Proteasomal Degradation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Palmitoylation by ZDHHC18 blocks ORF3a K27‐linked ubiquitination mediated by TRIM16, thereby preventing its proteasomal degradation and strengthening viral pathogenesis. Targeting palmitoylation through a pharmacological inhibitor (2‐BP), a competitive inhibitory peptide (OPIP), or adenovirus‐mediated knockdown of ZDHHC18 expression presents a ...

Who Knows Best What the Next Year Will Hold for You? The Validity of Direct and Personality‐based Predictions of Future Life Experiences Across Different Perceivers

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Personality, EarlyView., 2020
Abstract This study explored the validity of person judgements by targets and their acquaintances (‘informants’) in longitudinally predicting a broad range of psychologically meaningful life experiences. Judgements were gathered from four sources (targets, N = 189; and three types of informants, N = 1352), and their relative predictive validity was ...

Covering Post-Conflict Elections: Challenges for the Media in Central Africa Wahlberichterstattung in Post-Konflikt-Phasen: Herausforderungen für die Medien in Zentralafrika

open access: yesAfrica Spectrum, 2011
In the past ten years, elections were held in six countries of Central Africa experiencing “post-conflict” situations. The polls that took place in Burundi (2005), the Central African Republic (2005), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (2006), Congo ...

Next-Generation Dental Materials: Exploring Bacterial Biofilm Formation on 3D-Printable Resin-Based Composites

open access: yesJournal of Functional Biomaterials
This study evaluated the microbial growth profile of subgingival multispecies biofilm on 3D-printable resin-based composites (PRBCs). A 96-well cell plate cultivated a 39-species biofilm associated with periodontitis over 7 days.

The need for an early anti-neutrino run of NOvA [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The moderately large value of $\ty$, measured recently by reactor experiments, is very welcome news for the future neutrino experiments. In particular, the \nova experiment, with 3 years each of $\nu$ and $\anu$ runs, will be able to determine the mass ...

Strain‐Directed Ru Redistribution to Form RuO2/Pt Mosaic Heterointerfaces for Acid‐Stable Water Oxidation

open access: yesAdvanced Energy Materials, EarlyView.
Strain‐driven Ru inward migration creates confined RuO2/Pt mosaic heterointerfaces within a PtNi multiframe. These interfaces enable redox‐asymmetric Pt–Ru coupling that stabilizes Ru4+, suppresses lattice oxygen participation, and promotes highly durable acidic oxygen evolution.

Linear Sigma Models With Strongly Coupled Phases -- One Parameter Models

open access: yes, 2013
We systematically construct a class of two-dimensional $(2,2)$ supersymmetric gauged linear sigma models with phases in which a continuous subgroup of the gauge group is totally unbroken.

Thermometric Based‐Microswimmers with Chemical and Optical Engines

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
Temperature sensing at small scales is typically performed using passive luminescent particles. Here, an alternative approach is demonstrated by integrating upconversion thermometry into self‐propelled microswimmers powered by chemical fuels or light. This strategy offers a step toward dynamic thermal sensing at the microscale, relevant to both lab‐on ...
