The human 18S ribosomal RNA gene: evolution and stability.

We report the 1,870-base-pair primary sequence of a human 18S rRNA gene and propose a secondary structure based on this sequence and the general mammalian structure. A basic secondary structure for the small subunit rRNA has been preserved throughout evolution by compensatory and neutral base changes in double-stranded regions.

Ribosomes accomplish their translational role within a highly organized nucleoprotein structure. The specific aim for research on ribosomes, therefore, is to elucidate the architecture and eventually the function of these multi-molecular complexes. Prokaryotic 70 S ribosomes can be dissociated into a small 30 S subunit and a large 50 S subunit.

Inferring the phylogenetic position of Brugia pahangi using 18S ribosomal RNA (18S rRNA) gene sequence.

This paper presents the first reported use of 18S rRNA gene sequence to determine the phylogeny of Brugia pahangi. The 18S rRNA nucleotide sequence of a Malaysian B. pahangi isolate was obtained by PCR cloning and sequencing. The sequence was compared with 18S rRNA sequences of other nematodes, including those of some filarial nematodes.
