Using linked data for data analytic literary research: Case BookSampo—Finnish fiction literature on the semantic web

open access: yesJournal of the Association for Information Science and Technology, EarlyView.
Abstract The BookSampo Linked Data portal was deployed in 2011 by the Finnish Public Libraries and has today nearly 2 million annual users. Its Linked Data covers virtually all Finnish fiction literature but the data has not been used for data analyses in Digital Humanities. This paper discusses how the Knowledge Graph can be used for literary research

Autogenous self‐healing of concrete: Experimental design and test methodsA review

open access: yesEngineering Reports, Volume 5, Issue 1, January 2023., 2023
Concrete exhibits an intrinsic ability to heal cracks, defined as “autogenous self‐healing.” However, despite code restrictions, autogenous self‐healing of concrete shows limited effectiveness in practice. This indicates the need for further research to provide engineers with reliable design rules.

A Data-driven Investigation of Euphemistic Language: Comparing the usage of "slave" and "servant" in 19th century US newspapers [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
This study investigates the usage of "slave" and "servant" in the 19th century US newspapers using computational methods. While both terms were used to refer to enslaved African Americans, they were used in distinct ways. In the Chronicling America corpus, we included possible OCR errors by using FastText embedding and excluded text reprints to ...

A Quantile Approach to the Relationship between Body Mass, Wealth, and Inequality [PDF]

open access: yes
Little research exists on the historical relationship between BMI variation, wealth, and inequality. This study finds that 19th century US black and white BMIs were distributed symmetrically; neither wasting nor obesity was common. Nineteenth century BMI

Toward information resilience: Applying intersectionality to the HIV/AIDS information practices of Black sexual minority men

open access: yesJournal of the Association for Information Science and Technology, EarlyView.
Abstract Using intersectionality as a critical theoretical framework and analytical tool, this study investigated the HIV/AIDS information practices of Black sexual minority men (SMM). Twenty‐two Black SMM were interviewed about their HIV/AIDS‐related information practices.

The Matilda Effect and Women's Representation in Biology

open access: yesThe Bulletin of the Ecological Society of America, EarlyView.
Abstract The undervaluing of minorities and their researcher contributions reduces when a threshold level of minority representation (between 15 and 30%) is reached in a group or community. Botany is celebrated as a discipline in which women have been able to make important contributions, especially in the past.

Sediment supply control on morphodynamic processes in gravel‐bed river widenings

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 47, Issue 15, Page 3415-3434, December 2022., 2022
Mobile‐bed laboratory experiments combined with two‐dimensional hydrodynamic numerical simulations showed that sediment supply is a key driver of morphodynamic activity in reach‐scale dynamic river widenings. Sediment supply roughly balanced with the channel's transport capacity led to active channel widening and continued patchy sediment relocation ...
