Collision‐Resilient Winged Drones Enabled by Tensegrity Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Based on structures of birds such as the woodpeck, this article presents the collision‐resilient aerial robot, SWIFT. SWIFT leverages tensegrity structures in the fuselage and wings which allow it to undergo large deformations in a crash, without sustaining damage. Experiments show that SWIFT can reduce impact forces by 70% over conventional structures.

Synthesis and characterization of one-part geopolymers for extrusion based 3D concrete printing

open access: yesJournal of Cleaner Production, 2019
Interest in innovative construction processes such as 3D concrete printing (i.e. digital construction), is growing rapidly both in academia and industry. Processing conventional geopolymer mixes, in which alkaline solutions are used for activation, could

A real-time height measurement and feedback system for 3D concrete printing

open access: yes, 2017
Recent years have seen a rapid growth of additive manufacturing methods for concrete construction. Generally, these methods are based on a linear sequence of design → print path definition → actual printer actions in a print environment.

ChicGrasp: Imitation‐Learning‐Based Customized Dual‐Jaw Gripper Control for Manipulation of Delicate, Irregular Bio‐Products

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Automated poultry processing lines still rely on humans to lift slippery, easily bruised carcasses onto a shackle conveyor. Deformability, anatomical variance, and hygiene rules make conventional suction and scripted motions unreliable. We present ChicGrasp, an end‐to‐end hardware‐software co‐designed imitation learning framework, to offer a ...

Experimental exploration of metal cable as reinforcement in 3D printed concrete [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The Material Deposition Method (MDM) is enjoying increasing attention as an additive method to create concrete mortar structures characterised by a high degree of form-freedom, a lack of geometrical repetition, and automated construction.

Effect of printing parameters in 3D concrete printing: Printing region and support structures [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Materials Processing Technology, 2019
Abstract 3D concrete printing can be used to build many complex structures. However, due to its material properties in the fresh state, it is difficult to construct overhanging structures without supports. In order to unleash the true capability of 3D concrete printing, a support structure is required to support any overhanging fresh material, which ...

Systematic Exploration of 3D Concrete Printing Parameters for Conformal Printing on Sloped Surfaces

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
A conformal slicing algorithm is developed for robotic 3D concrete printing (3DCP) on sloped surfaces as a first step toward printing slab‐on‐grade foundations on uneven terrain. Systematic experiments quantify the effects of nozzle speed, extrusion rate, and toolpath direction on filament dimension and stability.

Engineering Osteoimmune Responses with Functionalized Orthopedic Implants for Post‐Operative Osteosarcoma Treatment

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Osteosarcoma is the most common primary bone tumor with limited treatment options and a terrible prognosis. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the recent development of osteoimmunomodulatory implants for post‐operative osteosarcoma treatment, of which the potential utility in evoking durable anti‐osteosarcoma immunity and accelerating bone
