3D geometric morphometric analysis of morphological covariation in the modern human postcanine dentition

open access: yesScientific Reports
Analysis of 3D shape covariation patterns between different tooth types is rarely investigated but is important for human evolution, dental anthropology, and medicine.

Effect of intentional cranial modification on cranial shape and size: Revisiting the contribution of radiographic data

open access: yesRevista Argentina de Antropología Biológica
The current availability of CT-generated lateral cephalograms has repositioned the use of information contained in two-dimensional data for assessing intentional cranial modification, with traditional lateral radiography (2D) still in use for this ...

Mapping the distribution of Meissner corpuscles throughout the human hand: Sex‐ and age‐dependent variations

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Meissner corpuscles are rapidly adapting mechanoreceptors involved in tactile discrimination in human glabrous hand skin. Detailed information on their regional distribution and variation across age, sex, and hand side remains limited. This study mapped Meissner corpuscles in 17 phalangeal and palmar regions from 46 individuals (27 male and 19

Large deformation diffeomorphic mapping of 3D shape variation reveals two distinct mandible and head capsule morphs in Atta vollenweideri leaf‐cutter worker ants

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
Ants are crucial ecosystem engineers, and their ecological success is facilitated by a division of labour among sterile “workers”. In some ant lineages, workers have undergone further morphological differentiation, resulting in differences in body size ...

Morphological adaptations of cervical vertebrae in plunge‐diving sulids

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Foraging strategy frequently drives morphological diversification in birds. The plunge‐diving behavior of certain species makes the functional and ecological trade‐offs of variation in cervical vertebrae an especially intriguing question. This study compares cervical vertebrae across five plunge‐diving species and two non‐plunge‐diving species,

Biomechanical strain patterns in Meckel's cartilage underlie mandibular variation in FGFR2 mouse models

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Sequence variations in fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 (FGFR2) are associated with craniosynostosis syndromes, disrupting craniofacial development, yet early mandibular alterations remain poorly characterized. This study examined Meckel's cartilage (MC) and mandibular morphology in mouse models of Apert (Fgfr2+/P253R) and Crouzon ...

Optimizing Strategies for Non‐Invasive Prospection of Settlements in the Intertidal Zone: A Case Study From the Centre of the Drowned Medieval Village of Tolsende (Scheldt Estuary, the Netherlands)

open access: yesArchaeological Prospection, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Medieval and early modern drowned villages in the intertidal zone of the Scheldt estuary (the Netherlands) constitute intriguing yet largely understudied components of north‐western Europe's underwater cultural heritage. Despite their high archaeological potential as time capsules of past settlement landscapes, research has remained limited ...

When Virchow's law fails: Crouzon syndrome as a test case for quantitative suture closure-endocranial shape relationships. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Anat
Crouzon syndrome shows preserved intracranial volume but profoundly altered endocranial shape, with disrupted allometric coupling relative to controls. Treating calvarial suture patency as a continuous, age‐adjusted variable reveals strong system‐level covariation with endocranial morphology, effects invisible to conventional categorical suture scoring.

Low‐Field MRI as a Multiparametric Tool for Large Engineered Tissue Characterization

open access: yesBiotechnology and Bioengineering, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Advances in 3D bioprinting have enabled the fabrication of large and complex engineered tissues, but their increasing size demands non‐invasive tools for monitoring structure, maturation, and perfusion. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) offers unique multiparametric capabilities, yet high‐field systems remain costly and inaccessible for most ...

Shape variability and sexual dimorphism of the chin: a 3D geometric morphometric analysis

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Orthodontics
Abstract Background The chin is a distinctive anatomical trait unique to Homo sapiens, with unclear origin and function. This study aimed to investigate chin morphology, describe shape variability, and identify potential sex differences.
