A new research frontier for evolutionary 2D image generation is the use of mathematical models of aesthetics, with the goal of automatically evolving aesthetically pleasing images. This paper investigates the application of similar models of aesthetics towards the evolution of 3-dimensional structures.

We introduce 3D warp brush, a new method for interactive shape modeling in an immersive virtual reality environment. 3D warp brushes are implicitly defined tools that operate on triangle meshes. We combine the efficiency of explicit mesh representations with intuitive implicit modeling operators.

Interactive 3D Model Completion
9th Biennial Conference of the Australian Pattern Recognition Society on Digital Image Computing Techniques and Applications (DICTA 2007), 2007A common problem when using automated structure from motion techniques is that the object to be modelled can only be partially reconstructed from the video. This can occur because not all of the object is visible in the video, or because of featureless or ambiguous regions on the object's surface.

We present a novel 3D model-guided interface for in-situ sketching on 3D planes. Our work is motivated by evolutionary design, where existing 3D objects form the basis for conceptual re-design or further design exploration. We contribute a novel workflow that exploits the geometry of an underlying 3D model to infer 3D planes on which 2D strokes drawn ...

The estimating problem of 3D holograms orientation selectivity on angular, orthogonal, and azimuthal sensitivity parameters is formulated and solved. Tenfold increase of density 3D, 2D/3D holograms in comparison with 2D holograms at given selectivity for ones is shown in theory and experimentally.

3D Sketch-Based 3D Model Retrieval
Proceedings of the 5th ACM on International Conference on Multimedia Retrieval, 2015How to draw 3D sketches in a three-dimensional space and how to use a hand-drawn 3D sketch to search similar 3D models are brand new and challenging research topics. In this paper, we make an initial study on 3D sketching and propose a novel 3D sketch-based 3D model retrieval system. Our system allows users to freely draw 3D sketches in the air as well

Advanced OPC Mask-3D and Resist-3D modeling
SPIE Proceedings, 2014The objective of this paper is to extend the ability of a more stable overall process control for the 28 nm Metal layer. A method to better control complex 2D-layout structures for this node is described. Challenges are coming from the fact that the structures, which limit the process window are mainly of 2D routing nature and are difficult to monitor.

It’s time to bring the ideas you’ve learned in the first couple of chapters and develop a model in SketchUp for 3D printing in Shapeways. The goal of this chapter is to get you acquainted with all the basic steps of developing a model for 3D printing.
