The visual perception of 3D shape
Trends in Cognitive Sciences, 2004A fundamental problem for the visual perception of 3D shape is that patterns of optical stimulation are inherently ambiguous. Recent mathematical analyses have shown, however, that these ambiguities can be highly constrained, so that many aspects of 3D structure are uniquely specified even though others might be underdetermined.

Learning Barycentric Representations of 3D Shapes for Sketch-Based 3D Shape Retrieval
2017 IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR), 2017Retrieving 3D shapes with sketches is a challenging problem since 2D sketches and 3D shapes are from two heterogeneous domains, which results in large discrepancy between them. In this paper, we propose to learn barycenters of 2D projections of 3D shapes for sketch-based 3D shape retrieval.

This paper reviews main approaches to 3D shape perception in both human and computer vision. The approaches are evaluated with respect to their plausibility of generating adequate explanations of human vision. The criterion for plausibility is provided by existing psychophysical results. A new theory of 3D shape perception is then outlined.
