Abstract This paper assesses the role of borrowings in two different approaches to linguistic phylogenetics: Traditional qualitative analyses of lexemes, and quantitative computational analysis of cognacy. It problematises the assumption that loanwords can be excluded altogether from datasets of lexical cognacy.

Abstract The savage was a familiar as well as deeply problematic figure in late‐Victorian literary and scientific imaginaries. Savages provided an unstable but capacious and flexible signifier to explore human development and human difference, most often in ways that followed a disturbing racial logic.
