Mechanisms of Increasing Weld Depth during Temporal Power Modulation in High‐Power Laser Beam Welding

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Temporal power modulation increases weld depth in high‐power laser beam welding of dissimilar round bars by nearly 20% compared to same average continuously welded welding power. The mechanism of action also applies to sheet welding and depends on the inertia of keyhole depth for the modulated laser beam power.

Simulation of Inhomogeneous Refractive Index Fields Induced by Hot Tailored Forming Components

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This article presents a simulation model for simulating inhomogeneous refractive index fields (IRIF) in hot‐forged components, accounting for thermal influences and complex geometries. Through this simulation, a priori knowledge about the propagation of the IRIF can be obtained, allowing for the positioning of the component or an optical measurement ...

Optimizing the Model of the Viking-400 UAS [PDF]

open access: yes
This project intends to update and redesign imperfections in the scanned 3D CAD model of the Viking 400 aircraft. This aircraft, similar to the Sierra-B UAS, will carry payloads of scientific instruments for research purposes.

A Novel Approach to Produce Metal–Metal Composites by Leveraging Immiscibility: Laser Powder Bed Fusion of Nanosilver‐Dispersed Titanium

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Incorporating nanosized silver into titanium for antimicrobial materials exploits the metastable miscibility gap between silver and titanium. Silver nanoparticles are synthesized via pulsed laser ablation in liquid. Silver addition refines the microstructure, increases hardness by 30%, and reduces Staphylococcus capitis microbial adhesion by 70%, with ...

Land Use Regulation as a Barrier to Entry: Evidence from the Texas Lodging Industry [PDF]

open access: yes
I empirically examines the anticompetitive effects of land use regulation by using microdata on midscale chain hotels in Texas. I construct a dynamic entry-exit model of midscale hotel chains.
