Let’s Print an Ecology in 3D (and 4D)

open access: yesMaterials
The concept of ecology, historically rooted in the economy of nature, currently needs to evolve to encompass the intricate web of interactions among humans and various organisms in the environment, which are influenced by anthropogenic forces. In this review, the definition of ecology has been adapted to address the dynamic interplay of energy ...

High‐Speed Photoresponse of CVD‐Grown Lateral TMD Heterostructures

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Internal electric fields generated by p‐n junctions and asymmetric Schottky barriers enhance the photoresponse speed in CVD‐grown monolayer TMD lateral heterostructures. This results in a 1.5‐2 orders of magnitude reduction in rise and fall times for optimized device configurations compared to homogeneous single‐material devices, enabling bandwidths ...

Preferential Interfacial Engineering of Hydrogels via Interdigitated Nanoparticle Assembly

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Robust surface functionalization of hydrogel surfaces is performed via interdigitated metal nanoparticle assembly, inducing strong affinity with the hydrogel matrix. The partially exposed nanoparticle domains act as interfacial nanobridges that mediate both chemical and physical bonding with diverse materials, including small molecules, fluorous ...

A review of 4D printing

open access: yesMaterials & Design, 2017
Abstract Research into 4D printing has attracted unprecedented interest since 2013 when the idea was first introduced. It is based on 3D printing technology, but requires additional stimulus and stimulus-responsive materials. Based on certain interaction mechanisms between the stimulus and smart materials, as well as appropriate design of multi ...

Multistage, Self‐Sensing Artificial Muscles With Coordination From Liquid Crystal Elastomer‐Graphene Composite Fibers

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Inspired by skeletal muscles’ precision and endurance, CoilLCE integrates a self‐sensing liquid crystal elastomer/graphene artificial muscle with an embedded Joule‐heating copper coil, enabling closed‐loop multistage actuation with programmable intermediate states (strain accuracy of 2%), and antagonistic coordination (32% total strain). These features

Embedded Direct Ink Writing of Thermoset and Elastomeric Polymers via Frontal Polymerization

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Embedded frontal polymerization direct ink writing (FP‐DIW) combines frontal ring‐opening metathesis polymerization with embedded 3D printing to decouple deposition from curing. A yield‐stress support bath stabilizes low‐viscosity inks, while on‐demand thermal initiation enables controlled front propagation. This approach expands the accessible feature

No Evidence that 2D:4D is Related to the Number of CAG Repeats in the Androgen Receptor Gene [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The length ratio of the second to the fourth digit (2D:4D) is a putative marker of prenatal testosterone (T) effects. The number of CAG repeats (CAGn) in the AR gene is negatively correlated with T sensitivity in vitro. Results regarding the relationship

Acetoacetates Derived From Vegetable Oils: A Platform for Tailor‐Made Vinylogous Urethane Foams

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A renewable vegetable oil is converted into acetoacetate‐functionalized precursors for the preparation of catalyst‐free vinylogous urethane foams. Room‐temperature foaming with n‐pentane generates lightweight cellular materials, while the choice of amine enables control over foam structure and mechanical properties.
