An optimized protocol to detect high‐throughput DNA methylation from custom targeted sequences on 96 samples simultaneously

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Workflow of a high‐throughput technology for epigenotyping of differentially methylated CpGs in specific regions of the genome. The protocol works with small amounts of DNA extracted from blood or semen. The protocol consists of both enzymatic conversion of unmethylated cytosines and capture by hybridization with a custom panel.

Freedom and Equality: Beyond Egalitarianism and Anti-Egalitarianism [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
Philosophy, as we know, is an abstract expression of worries, sentiments and longings that move people and societies. Philosophical debates are often innovative, but sometimes we have reason to ask ourselves why they develop at all and what general ...

Transcriptional regulation of neuropeptide receptors underlies context‐dependent adaptation in Drosophila melanogaster

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Under environmental changes, the expression level of neuropeptide (NP) and neuropeptide receptor (NPR) genes changes to confer context‐dependent adaptation to the model organism Drosophila melanogaster. Through finding more regulatory elements in the NPR genes in comparison with their ligands (NPs), we found that NPR‐biased transcriptional regulation ...

Diabetes‐induced vascular calcification is associated with low pyrophosphate and its oral supplementation prevents calcification in diabetic mice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Induction of diabetes in three different mouse strains uniformly resulted in an increase in TNAP activity and a reduction in pyrophosphate (PPi) in the circulation. Inhibition of TNAP restored plasma PPi. Diabetes‐induced calcification in the media layer of the aorta was detected only in the Abcc6−/− strain, which is predisposed to ectopic ...

Ligand Binding and Activation of PPARγ by Firemaster® 550: Effects on Adipogenesis and Osteogenesis in Vitro

open access: yesEnvironmental Health Perspectives, 2014
Background: The use of alternative flame retardants has increased since the phase out of pentabromodiphenyl ethers (pentaBDEs). One alternative, Firemaster® 550 (FM550), induces obesity in rats.

The distribution of asteroids: evidence from Antarctic micrometeorites [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
The relative abundances of types amongst 550 AMMs are reported. These suggest that C-type asteroids vary from petrologic type 1 to 3.2 and that the majority of S-type asteroids are chondrule ...

Expanding Hereditary Spastic Paraplegias Limits: Biallelic SPAST Variants in Cerebral Palsy Mimics

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Hereditary spastic paraplegias (HSP) are rare neurodegenerative disorders marked by spasticity and lower limb weakness. The most common type, SPG4, is usually autosomal dominant and caused by SPAST gene variants, typically presenting as pure HSP.

A 550 Mbit/s real-time visible light communication system based on phosphorescent white light LED for practical high-speed low-complexity application.

open access: yesOptics Express, 2014
In this paper, we first experimentally demonstrate a 550 Mbit/s real-time visible light communication (VLC) system based on nonreturn-to-zero on-off keying (NRZ-OOK) modulation of a commercial phosphorescent white light LED. The 3-dB modulation bandwidth
