Determination of 55Fe and 63Ni in Pb–Bi by Radiochemical Separation Method

open access: yesScience and Technology of Nuclear Installations
This paper introduces a simple and rapid separation method for the determination of 55Fe and 63Ni in lead–bismuth alloys. This method is based on chemical precipitation and solid-phase extraction chromatography techniques, which can separate and purify ...

Identification of New Key Players for Ferrous Iron Export in the Asymmetric Inner Gate of Human Ferroportin 1. [PDF]

open access: yesFASEB J
Ferroportin 1 is an iron exporter belonging to the Major Facilitator Superfamily. Its unusual intracellular gate is formed by asymmetric networks of non‐covalent bonds. We analyzed these networks using Molecular Dynamics simulations and experimental tests and identified novel amino acids as key players in inter‐lobe connections.

The cytochrome oxidase defect in ISC-depleted yeast is caused by impaired iron-sulfur cluster maturation of the mitoribosome assembly factor Rsm22. [PDF]

open access: yesFEBS Lett
The yeast mitoribosome assembly factor Rsm22 contains a [4Fe‐4S] cluster that is matured by the mitochondrial iron–sulfur cluster assembly (ISC) machinery. Defects in ISC components result in impaired mitochondrial protein synthesis due to a mitoribosome assembly defect.

Brain iron acquisition depends on age and sex in iron-deficient mice. [PDF]

open access: yesFASEB J
Developmental iron deficiency (ID) increased the brain 55Fe uptake in both males and females compared to the control mice. In adult mice, ID increases iron uptake in males but not females. The uptake of 55Fe was 10 times higher in the developing mice compared to the adult mice regardless of the sex and diet.

Gallium arsenide 55Fe X-ray-photovoltaic battery [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Applied Physics, 2016
The effects of temperature on the key parameters of a prototype GaAs 55Fe radioisotope X-ray microbattery were studied over the temperature range of −20 °C to 70 °C. A p-i-n GaAs structure was used to collect the photons from a 254 Bq 55Fe radioisotope X-ray source. Experimental results showed that the open circuit voltage and the short circuit current

Ion beam techniques for nuclear waste management [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2020
An automated CO2 gas handling and injection system was developed. It is designed to dilute CO2 samples with blank gas in a mixing volume. The system is intended to be used for the characterization and quantification of 14C content in reactor graphite ...

The Emotional Labour of the Coach - in and out of the coaching ‘room’ [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Evidence Based Coaching and Mentoring, 2022
Emotional labour is the activity of maintaining an appropriate outward demeanour at work. This study employed a phenomenological approach, using conceptual encounter, to explore the under-researched emotional labour of the coach.

Fine Powder Proportional Counters for Neutron Detection

open access: yesU.Porto Journal of Engineering, 2022
A novel neutron detection approach is presented, consisting of a neutron sensitive aerosol obtained by dispersing B4C fine powder in a gaseous proportional counter operating in continuous flow, which proved to effectively detect thermal neutrons.
