New records of crustaceans infesting Phractocephalus hemioliopterus (Siluriformes: Pimelodidae), the large catfish from the Amazon

open access: yesRevista Mexicana de Biodiversidad, 2019
The aim of the present study was to investigate the infracommunities of ectoparasitic crustaceans in Phractocephalus hemioliopterus Bloch and Schneider, 1801, a catfish from the lower Amazon River, in the state of Pará, eastern Amazon region, Brazil ...

Potential Invasive Indo‐Pacific Acropora in a Coral Reef of Venezuela: A Contribution to Their Morphological and Molecular Knowledge [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
We report the first record of a non‐native hermatypic coral in Venezuela, exhibiting biological traits characteristic of invasive species. The coral is a member of the genus Acropora (Scleractinia: Acroporidae), native to the Indo‐Pacific. This non‐native petrous coral occurred in a reef of the Morrocoy National Park, in the southern Caribbean.

Drivers of tail evolution in squamates and their implications for the fossorial origin of snakes

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract The axial skeleton serves as the primary structural support in all vertebrates and is subdivided into five distinct regions: cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral, and caudal. Relaxation of constraints acting on the terminal end of the axial skeleton has led to remarkable variation in caudal vertebrae number across Squamata.

Mactra guidoi n. sp. and Mactra patagonica (Bivalvia: Mactridae), two long misunderstood species from Southwestern Atlantic Ocean

open access: yes, 2010
A common mactrid from the southwestern Atlantic Ocean has been largely misunderstood in the literature. Since the early 20th century, this species has been referred to as Mactra patagonica d'Orbigny, 1846.

Uncovering a new Scrippsiella species from the Black Sea: Scrippsiella phycobiana sp. nov. (Thoracosphaerales, Dinophyceae)

open access: yesPhycological Research, EarlyView.
SUMMARY The dinophyte genus Scrippsiella is a common and ecologically important component of coastal microplankton communities, yet its species diversity in the Black Sea remains insufficiently resolved due to morphological similarity among taxa and the scarcity of integrative taxonomic studies. Here, we describe Scrippsiella phycobiana sp. nov., a new

Ecological characteristics of Triatoma patagonica at the Southern limit of its distribution (Chubut, Argentina)

open access: yesMemorias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, 2003
This study aimed at identifying the ecological characteristics of Triatoma patagonica Del Ponte 1929 (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) and evaluating the epidemiological importance of this species at its southernmost distribution limit.

Ancient hybridization and phylogenetic discordance: Exploring evolutionary complexity in Asteraceae

open access: yesApplications in Plant Sciences, Volume 14, Issue 3, May-June 2026.
Abstract Premise Conflicting phylogenetic signals are common in plant phylogenomics and often reflect evolutionary histories shaped by processes like hybridization, incomplete lineage sorting, and whole‐genome duplication (WGD). We aimed to identify and assess these complex processes in the hyper‐diverse family Asteraceae to offer insight into the ...

Corallorhiza striata is the first example of a pseudocopulatory orchid in North America and an instance of “double deception” in fully mycoheterotrophic plants

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, Volume 113, Issue 4, April 2026.
Abstract Premise Orchids have many pollination strategies, from highly species‐specific mutualisms with insects to deceit pollination, including sexual deception. The family also has the most leafless, parasitic species (mycoheterotrophs) of any plant family.
