MASW Imaging of an Abandoned Minnesota Mine

Symposium on the Application of Geophysics to Engineering and Environmental Problems 2006, 2006
Several sinkholes have occurred on the site of a large, public historical center structure in northern Minnesota and ground subsidence has caused structural damage to some of the center's buildings. The structure was built over mine dump material, underlain by glacial drift and a Cretaceous iron formation.

Shallow Seismic Investigations of an Abandoned Mine

Proceedings, 2012
The near-surface rock structure that covers an abandoned marl mine nearby the village of Montevecchia (Italy) was investigated through a combination of seismic surveys performed in two different survey campaigns. The methods selected for these investigations were Refraction Seismics and Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW).

Geophysical Characterization Of An Abandoned Gold Mine

16th EEGS Symposium on the Application of Geophysics to Engineering and Environmental Problems, 2003
The North State Goldmine in High Point, North Carolina was active from the early 1800’s to around the turn-of-the-century. It is now part of a residential area that is under development. The primary purpose of the geophysical surveys conducted on the site was to identify voids and other features that may present geotechnical hazards during development.

Abandoned mines in Ontario

2010
With the promulgation of Bill 71 in June 1991, the closure of mines in the province of Ontario must meet stricter environmental conditions. The legacy of open shafts and derelict sites should be brought to an end. A new Abandoned Mines Abatement Program was also introduced in 1991 to deal with clean-up of abandoned sites that have reverted to the Crown

Fires in Abandoned Coal Mines

Environmental & Engineering Geoscience, 1990
Mine fires occur on abandoned mine lands throughout the U. S. coal fields. They threaten the health and safety of the local populations and consume a non-renewable natural resource. In general, mine fires are the most costly abandoned mine lands problem to mitigate. In active mines, fires are quickly extinguished by the mining company as they present a

Abandonment of Mine Tailings Ponds

Canadian Water Resources Journal, 1986
In response to growing concern about the long-term environmental impact of abandoned mines and their tailing ponds, regulating authorities are beginning to request that abandonment plans be submitted with license applications. This paper suggests criteria that such plans should meet and emphasizes the need to ensure that adequate funding will be ...

Ten abandoned gold mines

2001
I thank Domenico Senato and his fellow organizers for the kind invitation to participate in this gathering of friends of Gian-Carlo Rota — to grieve with you his passing and to search with you for a renewal of the work he laid out for us. Mimmo and Elvira have asked me to speak about Gian-Carlo’s mathematical work — and I do so in keen recollection of ...
