Statin intensity and postoperative mortality following open repair of intact abdominal aortic aneurysm. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
BackgroundThere is a lack of evidence for the association between intensive statin therapy and outcomes following vascular surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between perioperative statin intensity and in-hospital mortality ...

The clinical use of platelet transfusions: A systematic literature review and meta‐analysis on behalf of the International Collaboration for Transfusion Medicine Guidelines

open access: yesTransfusion, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Platelets are frequently transfused, but supply and potential harms highlight the importance of appropriate use. Study Design and Methods Our systematic review (SR) followed a predefined protocol. Eligible studies included SRs, randomized controlled trials (RCTs), and matched cohort observational studies between 1946 and March 2025.

Feasibility of conducting a randomized controlled trial to explore the muscular influence of post‐operative intravenous iron treatment for anaemia after major abdominal surgery

open access: yesVox Sanguinis, EarlyView.
Abstract Background and Objectives Iron deficiency anaemia is common in patients recovering from major surgery and is associated with poorer post‐operative outcomes. We designed a randomized controlled trial treating post‐operative anaemia with iron therapy to observe the influence on post‐operative recovery.

Acute alterations in blood lactate in the setting of transient stress induced myocardial ischaemia

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract An elevation in resting venous blood lactate ([La−]b) levels in conditions of myocardial hypoperfusion is associated with adverse prognosis and survival. This investigation aimed to assess changes in venous [La−]b levels induced by dobutamine stress in the presence and absence of myocardial ischaemia and adverse outcomes at 1 year.

Pannexin 1 and pannexin 3 differentially regulate the cancer cell properties of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend PANX1 and PANX3 show opposite expression patterns in patient‐derived normal skin and cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) tumours, with PANX1 increased and PANX3 mRNA decreased in cSCC tumours compared to skin. Within the tumour PANX1 localizes to all regions, including tumour nests which house cSCC cancer cells and tumour ...

Computational analysis to assess hemodynamic forces in descending thoracic aortic aneurysms

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Left: Pre‐processing. First, we perform the segmentation of the Computer Tomography angiorgraphy (angio‐CT) scans of a healthy patient, obtaining the surface of a healthy thoracic aorta with a Type III aortic arch. Then, we build nine ideal configurations with Descending Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm (DTAA), varying the aortic arch ...

MMP9High Neutrophils are Critical Mediators of Neutrophil Extracellular Traps Formation and Myocardial Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 12, Issue 21, June 5, 2025.
During a heart attack, neutrophils rapidly activate and differentiate into a specific subset characterized by high levels of MMP9, a tissue‐damaging enzyme, via the SPI1/CST7 pathway. These neutrophils form harmful net‐like structures (Neutrophil extracellular traps, NETs) that exacerbate heart injury.

Analysis of Nicotine Toxicity and Mechanisms of Senescence in Nucleus Pulposus Cells Using Network Toxicology and Molecular Docking Technique

open access: yesJOR SPINE, Volume 8, Issue 2, June 2025.
The current study improves cyber toxicology as a method of evaluating environmental toxicity and molecular biological qualities in addition to clarifying the possible molecular pathways of nicotine‐induced senescence in IVDD. ABSTRACT Aim Through the use of network toxicology, the research sought to determine whether cellular senescence and associated ...

Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor 1 Controls Abdominal Aortic Aneurism Formation via the Modulation of TGF‐β/Smad2/3 Signaling in Mice

open access: yesThe FASEB Journal, Volume 39, Issue 9, 15 May 2025.
Graphical illustration of the mechanism underlying the acceleration of plasminogen activator inhibitor1 deletion‐mediated abdominal aneurysm formation in mice undergoing calcium chloride2 induction surgery. Genetic intervention targeted toward plasminogen activator inhibitor1 accelerated AAA formation via the modulation of TGF‐β/Smad2/3 signaling in ...

Screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm

open access: yesJournal of British Surgery, 2001
In spite of increasing number of elective resections of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) the mortality or ruptured AAA is increasing. The advantages of elective operations are obvious; the lethality is 2-6% while the lethality of ruptured AAA is 75-95%. However, AAA seldom causes symptoms before rupture.
