The authors examine the effects of ultrasound on the diagnosis and treatment of abdominal masses in children. Some of the newer imaging modalities may also be required on a selective basis. All in all, these modalities have led to a completely new approach to abdominal masses in children.

Imaging Abdominal Masses

Both radiography and ultrasound provide noninvasive imaging of suspected abdominal masses with minimal discomfort or risk for the geriatric patient. Radiography is more readily available and less expensive than ultrasonography, but contrast resolution is poor.

A large proportion of abdominal masses in infants and children are neoplasms, and most are malignant. Diagnosis may be evident after correlation of clinical findings but should be confirmed by radiographic studies. Intravenous pyelogram (left, below) shows inferior displacement of right kidney by large neuroblastoma.

Dr. Joseph H. Lyons: This 1-month-old male infant weighed 4.3 kg (9 lb 61/2 oz) at birth. The mother was a healthy 23-year-old primipara, and the 42-week pregnancy was not remarkable except for a tooth abscess early in the first trimester which was treated with antibiotics for three weeks.
