Increasing Obesity Severity Is Associated With Less Surgical Care in the United States

open access: yesObesity, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Approximately 41% of the US population has obesity, though the prevalence of the highest BMI populations (e.g., ≥ 60 kg/m2) is increasing most rapidly. Given the association between obesity and surgical disease burden, we hypothesized that higher BMI groups would account for a growing proportion of operative volume over time.

Plasma Lidocaine Concentrations During Intravenous Lidocaine Infusion Therapy in the Pediatric Population—A Scoping Review

open access: yesPediatric Anesthesia, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Intravenous lidocaine therapy (IVLT) is often used in perioperative multimodal analgesia due to its analgesic, anti‐hyperalgesic, and anti‐inflammatory effects. In adults, IVLT doses of 1–2 mg/kg/h produce plasma concentrations of 1–2 μg/mL, within the presumed therapeutic range of 1–5 μg/mL.

Prenatal Magnetic Resonance Imaging Assessment of Fetal Airway Dimensions: Establishing an Anthropometric Database

open access: yesPrenatal Diagnosis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Fetal airway anomalies can severely impair breathing at birth, potentially causing brain injury or death. Thus, early prenatal diagnosis is essential. While MRI is the most effective imaging modality for evaluating fetal airways, normative MRI data remain scarce.

Association of Salivary Micro Ribonucleic Acid Levels With the Severity of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 Infection in Children

open access: yesPediatric Discovery, EarlyView.
This cohort study of 395 children (mean age 7 years) with SARS‐CoV‐2 demonstrates that measuring levels of miR‐296‐5p in saliva at the time of initial clinical presentation may aid the prognosis of severe symptoms. ABSTRACT Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) may impact immune‐related micro ribonucleic acids (miRNAs).

Chiropractic spinal manipulative therapy versus physical therapist‐led exercise and the risk of cauda equina syndrome in adults with lumbar disc herniation, stenosis, or radiculopathy

open access: yesPM&R, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Cauda equina syndrome is a surgical emergency often caused by lumbar disc herniation. Spinal manipulative therapy is commonly used for lumbar spine disorders, but case reports have raised concerns it may precipitate cauda equina syndrome. One cohort study suggested no increased risk, although it did not focus on patients with lumbar
