Loss, persistence and reversal of phenotypic traits

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 101, Issue 5, Page 2119-2133, October 2026.
ABSTRACT The irreversibility of complex trait loss has long been a tenet of evolutionary biology. However, this idea is increasingly at odds with the numerous documented exceptions across the Tree of Life. We synthesise this growing body of evidence across a diverse array of taxa and traits, exploring the evolutionary conditions that enable ...

Traction‐Induced Avulsion of an Iliocaval Venous Branch During Multilevel OLIF for Degenerative Scoliosis: Case Report

open access: yesClinical Case Reports, Volume 14, Issue 10, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Adult degenerative scoliosis can be effectively treated with lateral or oblique lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF/OLIF), but vascular injury remains a rare and potentially catastrophic complication. We report the case of a 78‐year‐old woman with long‐standing degenerative scoliosis who underwent multilevel OLIF from L2 to L5.

Recurrent Congenital Hiatal Hernia After Laparoscopic Repair Complicated by Gastric Perforation and Abdominal Compartment Syndrome

open access: yesClinical Case Reports, Volume 14, Issue 10, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Complete excision of the hernial sac during congenital hiatal hernia repair may help prevent recurrence. This case also emphasizes the importance of early recognition and prompt management of abdominal compartment syndrome when progressive abdominal distension and organ dysfunction develop postoperatively.

A Case Report of Cecal Perforation Due to Sigmoid Tumor Incarceration in Inguinal Hernia

open access: yesClinical Case Reports, Volume 14, Issue 10, October 2026.
ABSTRACT This case highlights an unusual presentation in which incarceration of a sigmoid tumor within an inguinal hernia sac resulted in colonic obstruction and subsequent cecal perforation, emphasizing the importance of prompt imaging and surgical evaluation in patients with this rare combination.

Gastric Emptying in Obesity and Weight‐Loss Interventions: Physiology, Assessment, and Clinical Implications

open access: yesComprehensive Physiology, Volume 16, Issue 5, October 2026.
Obesity is associated with accelerated gastric emptying. Weight‐loss interventions each impose a distinct emptying signature: acceleration after sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass, delay after endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty, intragastric balloon, and GLP‐1 receptor agonists.

Shear Stress‐Stimulated Trafficking of Endothelial Piezo1 to Splenic Capsule Boosts Spleen Contraction and Exercise Endurance

open access: yesJournal of Extracellular Vesicles, Volume 15, Issue 10, October 2026.
The vasculo‐splenic axis during exercise: shear stress triggers the release of medium/large extracellular vesicles from vascular endothelial cells via activation of Piezo1, shuttling Piezo1 to the smooth muscle cells in the splenic capsule; the translocated Piezo1 within the splenic capsule acts as a downstream effector of the α1‐adrenergic receptor ...

Laparoscopic Methylene Blue Photodynamic Therapy for Intraabdominal Infection: A Preclinical Feasibility Study in a Rabbit Model of Perforated Appendicitis

open access: yesLasers in Surgery and Medicine, Volume 58, Issue 8, Page 644-655, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Objectives Perforated appendicitis commonly results in intra‐abdominal infection requiring prolonged antibiotic therapy. Intraoperative antimicrobial adjuncts are limited, and photodynamic therapy (PDT) may provide a targeted, resistance‐independent approach.

A Static Phantom for Harmonization of Hyperpolarized [1–13C]Pyruvate Metabolic Magnetic Resonance Imaging

open access: yesMagnetic Resonance in Medicine, Volume 96, Issue 4, Page 1769-1777, October 2026.
ABSTRACT PurposeTo develop and characterize a static, reusable 13C phantom designed to assess and support the harmonization of MRI setups used for hyperpolarized (HP) [1‐13C]pyruvate imaging. MethodsThe phantom was designed as a 200‐mm‐diameter polycarbonate sphere filled with 8M natural abundance urea and incorporating distinct modules for assessing ...

Optimal Control‐Based RF Pulses Versus Classical Motion‐Encoding Strategies for In Vivo Hepatic MR Elastography Across Multiple Excitation Frequencies in Mice: Reproducibility Assessment

open access: yesNMR in Biomedicine, Volume 39, Issue 10, October 2026.
Optimal control (OC)–based motion encoding doubles SNR in vivo in murine hepatic MRE by eliminating motion‐encoding gradients and enabling shorter echo times. Quantitative liver stiffness measurements remain consistent with conventional MEG‐MRE across multiple excitation frequencies, supporting longitudinal studies and clinical translation ...

Intra-Abdominal Hypertension and Abdominal Compartment Syndrome after Abdominal Wall Reconstruction: Quaternary Syndromes?

open access: yesScandinavian Journal of Surgery, 2017
Background and Aims: Reconstruction with reconstitution of the container function of the abdominal compartment is increasingly being performed in patients with massive ventral hernia previously deemed inoperable.
