Novel drugs approved by the EMA, the FDA and the MHRA in 2025: A year in review

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, Volume 183, Issue 9, Page 1779-1813, May 2026.
Abstract In the 2025 novel drug mini‐review, one can take a full measure of the ingenuity that underlies current drug design and development, despite the year's smaller harvest (46 novel drugs) compared to 2024 (53) and 2023 (70). 54% of the novel drugs are first‐in‐class (FIC).

Advanced Extractables and Leachables Assessment of Microcarriers Used for Adherent Cell Cultures

open access: yesBiotechnology Journal, Volume 21, Issue 4, April 2026.
Graphical Abstract and Lay Summary We present a comprehensive workflow for the Extractables and Leachables (E & L) assessment of microcarriers used in adherent cell culture. Four key components are appied: experimental extractables testing (USP <665>), modelling of extractables release, process modelling, and safety assessment via biocompatibility and ...

Vaspin identified as a DNA‐binding serpin with functional consequences for protease inhibition

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, Volume 293, Issue 7, Page 2119-2132, April 2026.
Vaspin is a serpin that is expressed in skin, adipose tissue, and liver. It binds to single‐ and double‐stranded DNA with high affinity. This binding is unaffected by mutation of the known heparin‐binding site, accelerates the inhibition of the inflammatory protease KLK7, and may contribute to vaspin's nuclear localization.

Early Prediction of Scar Outcomes: A Prospective Study on the Predictive Value of 3‐Month Scar Assessments for 12‐Month Results

open access: yesInternational Wound Journal, Volume 23, Issue 4, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Scar outcomes are traditionally evaluated at 12 months post‐surgery, yet early prediction of long‐term scar characteristics may facilitate timely interventions, enhance treatment strategies, shorten clinical trial durations, and improve patient outcomes.

Prolonged Release of IL‐10 From Enzyme‐Mediated Poly‐l‐(Tyrosine‐co‐Phenylalanine) Nanocrystals Enhances Stability and Modulates Inflammatory Responses

open access: yesBiopolymers, Volume 117, Issue 2, March 2026.
Schematic representation of enzyme‐mediated peptide nanocrystal formation and IL‐10 encapsulation, providing stabilized and sustained cytokine delivery that modulates macrophage phenotype and reduces inflammatory responses. ABSTRACT Protease‐catalyzed synthesis of a peptide composed of l‐tyrosine and l‐phenylalanine (2.2:1 M ratio) was achieved in a ...
