The Demographic Cost of Reproduction and Its Consequences in Balsam Fir (Abies balsamea)
It is an axiom of life-history theory that reproduction involves age-specific costs in terms of survival or future reproduction. The measurement of costs of reproduction in plants is difficult, and few field studies have measured these costs in terms of fitness or demographic components, thus creating a hiatus between theory and data.

Identification of abscisic acid in Abies balsamea
Phytochemistry, 1972Abstract Abscisic acid was positively identified in dormant buds of the conifer Abies balsamea on the basis of chromatographic behavior, inhibition in a bioassay, and mass spectrometry. Sublimation was a valuable adjunct to chromatographic separation techniques.

Rest in the cambium of Abies balsamea
Canadian Journal of Botany, 1974Cuttings were collected from the field between September and May, when buds and cambia are dormant, and were placed under favorable conditions in environmental cabinets. Radial width of new xylem, measured at the midpoint of the cuttings, was used to indicate cambial activity. In bud-bearing cuttings, cambial activity was associated with bud activity ...
