Population Studies, 1971Abstract Previous estimates of the incidence of illegal abortion in this country are reviewed. It is suggested that data examined by Goodhart imply that there were more (perhaps many more) than 60,000 illegal abortions in 1967. Estimates of the incidence of female sterilizing operations are reviewed.

The Lancet, 1993Misoprostol, a prostaglandin E1 analogue indicated for ulcer treatment, has been widely used as an abortifacient by women in Brazil, where abortion is legal only in cases of rape or incest, or to save the woman's life. Because misoprostol is an inefficient abortifacient, many women who use it have incomplete abortions and need uterine evacuation.

Induced Illegal Abortions in Benin City, Nigeria
International Journal of Gynecology & Obstetrics, 1976Abortions of all types constitute about 25% of our gynaecological admissions. In 8 months period between July 1974 and February 1975, 59 patients admitted into our unit with confirmed illegally induced abortions were studied personally by the author. It was found that most patients with this type of abortion were single, young schoolgirls.
