Climate‐Driven Mangrove Dieback and Recovery: A Case Study in Albert and Leichhardt Rivers, Australia

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
Cycles of dieback and recovery drove mangrove forest dynamics at the Albert and Leichhardt Rivers (Gulf of Carpentaria, Queensland, Australia) over 36 years (1987–2023). Landward margins were the most affected by reduced tidal inundation when the alignment of low lunar declination suppressed tidal range and extreme El Niño phases lowered mean sea level.

Bridging the divide between models of animal‐driven and microbial‐driven biogeochemical cycling: A zoogeochemistry‐informed framework

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Most current terrestrial biogeochemical models formalize biogeochemical cycling as predominantly controlled by processes involving plants and soil microbes. However, growing evidence indicates that above‐ground animals could exert controlling feedback effects that alter

The stability of aboveground productivity in a semiarid steppe in China is influenced by the plant community structure

open access: yesCommunications Earth & Environment
The temporal stability of aboveground net primary productivity is generally regulated by plant community structure and species diversity. There are recurring debates on the mechanisms by which environmental changes impact productivity stability in ...

Human Appropriation of Net Primary Production (HANPP) in an Agriculturally-Dominated Watershed, Southeastern USA

open access: yesLand, 2015
Human appropriation of net primary production (HANPP) quantifies alteration of the biosphere caused by land use change and biomass harvest. In global and regional scale assessments, the majority of HANPP is associated with agricultural biomass harvest ...

F values and the probability (P> F) of two factored ANOVA results on RUEANPP, RUENPP, TEANPP and TENPP.

open access: yes, 2013
RUEANPP = rain use efficiency based on aboveground net primary productivity; RUENPP = rain use efficiency based on total net primary productivity; TEANPP = transpiration efficiency based on aboveground net primary productivity; TENPP = transpiration ...

Comprehensive framework for assessing and optimizing existing research networks

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Conservation, monitoring, and research networks, or collections of ecological research sites unified under a common mission of data collection or a research mission, are essential infrastructure for understanding large landscapes. However, most networks developed opportunistically over decades rather than through systematic design, creating ...

Primary production of the central grassland region of the United States [PDF]

open access: yes, 1988
Aboveground net primary production of grasslands is strongly influenced by the amount and distribution of annual precipitation. Analysis of data collected at 9500 sites throughout the central United States confirmed the overwhelming importance of water ...

Ecosystem service gradients at protected area borders reveal multiple patterns and prevalent management conflicts

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Protected areas cannot halt biodiversity loss in isolation; integrating them with surrounding human‐dominated landscapes is critical. However, this integration is challenged by substantial landscape heterogeneity at protected area borders, making it difficult to determine cross‐border changes in ecosystem service provision.
