Optimal Biomass Allocation to Leaves Across Global Terrestrial Ecosystems

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 32, Issue 11, November 2026.
This study presents an optimality‐based theory that integrates leaf economic traits and the leaf area index–biomass production ratio to predict leaf carbon allocation from environmental conditions. The theory explains global patterns of leaf carbon allocation and predicts a progressive decline in biomass allocated to leaves under rising atmospheric CO2.

Rice Productivity in Saline–Alkaline Soils: Constraints, Microbiome‐Mediated Regulation and Management Strategies

open access: yesJournal of Agronomy and Crop Science, Volume 212, Issue 6, November 2026.
ABSTRACT Saline–alkaline soils are widespread and represent a particularly restrictive environment for rice, especially in arid and semi‐arid regions. These soils commonly combine elevated salinity with high pH, sodium‐related soil constraints and bicarbonate/carbonate accumulation, resulting in severe physicochemical and nutritional limitations. Under

Root Plasticity and Hormonal Regulation Shape Alfalfa Cultivar Responses to Drought and Waterlogging

open access: yesJournal of Agronomy and Crop Science, Volume 212, Issue 6, November 2026.
ABSTRACT Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is a globally strategic forage legume whose productivity is increasingly threatened by climatic variability, particularly recurrent drought and flooding events. Although both stresses disrupt plant water balance, they impose contrasting physiological constraints that require distinct adaptive strategies.

Towards an In‐Depth Understanding of the Versatile Functions of Silicon in Legumes Under Biotic and Abiotic Stress: Identifying Research Gaps

open access: yesJournal of Agronomy and Crop Science, Volume 212, Issue 6, November 2026.
ABSTRACT Studies have shown the vital role of silicon (Si) under stress conditions, suggesting it could be used as a basic fertilizer. Collectively, as a strategic approach under biotic and abiotic stress conditions, Si offers a sustainable means to boost legume resilience and productivity, thereby contributing significantly to food security amid ...

Trade‐Offs and Synergies Among Grain Yield and Water Use Efficiency for Climate Change Mitigation and Soil Fertility Rehabilitation in Wheat Production?

open access: yesJournal of Agronomy and Crop Science, Volume 212, Issue 6, November 2026.
ABSTRACT Selecting crop genotypes that optimally balance grain yield, water‐use efficiency and belowground carbon allocation is increasingly critical to mitigate climate change, water scarcity and soil degradation while sustaining food production. Although grain yield, water‐use efficiency and belowground carbon allocation have been widely studied as ...
