Abstract Four methods commonly used for estimating secondary production of invertebrates were applied to clonal emergent aquatic macrophytes as a means of estimating net annual aboveground production (NAAP). Results from these techniques were then compared with those from two traditional methods of estimating NAAP, the summed shoot maximum and the ...

It appears that two main factors hinder the effective incorporation of ecological information derived from computer modeling in resource management at large spatial scales: (1) some models are not ecologically sound and (2) most models based on ecological principles are often too sophisticated or detailed, having complex structures and requiring a ...

Water availability is the primary constraint to aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) in many terrestrial biomes, and it is an ecosystem driver that will be strongly altered by future climate change. Global circulation models predict a shift in precipitation patterns to growing season rainfall events that are larger in size but fewer in number ...

The biomass and productivity of Schima superba-Castanopsis carlesii forests in Tiantong, Zhejiang Province, were determined using overlapping quadrants and stem analyses. The total community biomass was (225.3+/-30.1) t hm(-2), of which the aboveground parts accounted for 72.0% and the underground parts accounted for 28.0%.

Abstract A non-destructive net aboveground primary production (NAPP) estimation technique which reduces the amount of labour required without sacrificing method accuracy was developed using phenometric models for nine species from freshwater Everglades wetlands.

The objective of this study was to quantify spatial patterns in above- and belowground biomass, primary productivity, and growth efficiency along a tidal gradient in a 4700-ha mangrove forest in the Dominican Republic. We tested the hypothesis that spatial patterns of forest structure and growth following 50 years of development were associated with ...

Patterns and controls of annual aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) are fundamental metrics of ecosystem functioning. It is generally assumed, but rarely tested, that determinants of ANPP in one region within a biome will operate similarly throughout that biome, as long as physiognomy and climate are broadly consistent.

Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) is widely selected as a model feedstock for sustainable replacement of fossil fuels and climate change mitigation. However, how climate changes, such as altered precipitation (PPT), will influence switchgrass growth and soil carbon storage potential have not been well investigated.

Abstract We used an Atlantic grassland system on the Iberian Peninsula to ascertain whether monthly climate variability explains variation in monthly aboveground net primary production (ANPP) and to test whether climate-ANPP relationships depend on grazing regime.

Variation in foliar nitrogen and aboveground net primary production in young postfire lodgepole pine
Canadian Journal of Forest Research, 2009Understanding nutrient dynamics of young postfire forests may yield important insights about how stands develop following stand-replacing wildfires. We studied 15-year-old lodgepole pine stands that regenerated naturally following the 1988 Yellowstone fires to address two questions: (1) How do foliar nitrogen (N) concentration and total foliar N vary ...
