Highly Abrasion-resistant and Long-lasting Concrete [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Studded tire usage in Alaska contributes to rutting damage on pavements resulting in high maintenance costs and safety issues. In this study binary, ternary, and quaternary highly-abrasion resistant concrete mix designs, using supplementary cementitious ...

Utilization of plastic waste as replacement of natural aggregates in sustainable concrete: effects on mechanical and durability properties

open access: yesInternational Journal of Environmental Science and Technology, 2023
The study presents the mechanical and durability properties of concrete made up of recycled-waste-polyethylene (PE) and waste-polyethylene-terephthalate (PET)-based aggregate as replacement of natural fine and coarse aggregate, respectively.

Aberrant expression of nuclear prothymosin α contributes to epithelial‐mesenchymal transition in lung cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Nuclear prothymosin α inhibits epithelial‐mesenchymal transition (EMT) in lung cancer by increasing Smad7 acetylation and competing with Smad2 for binding to SNAI1, TWIST1, and ZEB1 promoters. In early‐stage cancer, ProT suppresses TGF‐β‐induced EMT, while its loss in the nucleus in late‐stage cancer leads to enhanced EMT and poor prognosis.

Prediction of Mechanical, Evenness and Imperfection Properties of 100% Cotton Ring Spun Yarns with Different Twist Levels

open access: yesMehran University Research Journal of Engineering and Technology, 2022
The purpose of this research work is to develop a model to predict the effect of twist on mechanical, evenness and imperfection properties of 100% cotton ring spun yarns. Eight yarns were manufactured from 30Tex with four yarn twist increments (700, 740,

ZnS/Diamond Composite Coatings for Infrared Transmission Applications Formed by the Aerosol Deposition Method

open access: yes, 2013
The deposition of nano-crystalline ZnS/diamond composite protective coatings on silicon, sapphire, and ZnS substrates, as a preliminary step to coating infrared transparent ZnS substrates from powder mixtures by the aerosol deposition method is presented.

Micro-abrasion resistance of thermochemically treated steels in aqueous solutions: Mechanisms, maps, materials selection [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The area of micro-abrasion is an interesting and relatively recent area in tribo-testing methodologies, where small particles of less than 10 μm are employed between interacting surfaces.

Early metastasis is characterized by Gr1+ cell dysregulation and is inhibited by immunomodulatory nanoparticles

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Breast cancer metastasis is associated with myeloid cell dysregulation and the lung‐specific accumulation of tumor‐supportive Gr1+ cells. Gr1+ cells support metastasis, in part, through a CHI3L1‐mediated mechanism, which can be targeted and inhibited with cargo‐free, polymeric nanoparticles.

Influences of MgO and PVA Fiber on the Abrasion and Cracking Resistance, Pore Structure and Fractal Features of Hydraulic Concrete

open access: yesFractal and Fractional, 2022
Abrasion resistance and cracking resistance are two important properties determining the normal operation and reliability of hydropower projects that are subjected to erosion and abrasive action.

The Ruminant sorting mechanism protects teeth from abrasives

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2022
Dental wear due to ingestion of dust and grit has deleterious consequences. Herbivores that could not wash their food hence had to evolve particularly durable teeth, in parallel to the evolution of dental chewing surface complexity to increase chewing efficacy.
