Microstructures and mechanical properties of pure tantalum processed by high-pressure torsion

open access: yes, 2014
A body-centred cubic (BCC) structure metal, tantalum, was processed by high- pressure torsion (HPT) at room temperature with different numbers of rotations. The microstructural evolution was studied by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD).

Mesoporous Carbon Thin Films with Large Mesopores as Model Material for Electrochemical Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Mesoporous carbon thin films possessing 70 nm mesopores are prepared on titanium substrates by soft templating of resol resins with a self‐synthesized poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐poly(hexyl acrylate) block copolymer. A strategy to avoid corrosion of the metal substrate is presented, and the films are extensively characterized in terms of morphology ...

Simulation of 1D Abrasive Vibratory Finishing Process

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Research, 2012
The vibratory finishing process involves three dimensional motion of abrasive media interacting with part surfaces. With the ultimate goal of simulating such media motion in laboratory conditions, we present here a first step that makes use of a tribometer’s recipricating drive to provide one dimensional controlled vibrations.

A Biologically‐Architected Wear and Damage‐Resistant Nanoparticle Coating From the Radular Teeth of Cryptochiton stelleri

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The ultrahard teeth of mollusks that feed on rocky substrates contain a wear‐resistant coating on their surfaces consisting of densely packed mesocrystalline magnetic nanoparticles within an organic matrix. These coatings display significant hardness and toughness through their highly controlled mesocrystalline architectures.

Microstructure and Surface Morphology of Inconel 625 Alloy Prepared by Laser Melting Deposition using Abrasive-Assisted Jet Electrochemical Machining

open access: yesInternational Journal of Electrochemical Science, 2018
Laser melting deposition (LMD) is typically used for forming and repairing large-scale complex nickel-based superalloy parts, such as aero engines. Defects occur on the surface and structure during LMD and after the completion of forming, so LMD-jet ...

Toughening β‐Ga2O3 via Mechanically Seeded Dislocations

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
β‐Ga2O3 is promising for next‐generation semiconductors but its brittleness limits flexible and high‐precision applications. Here, mechanically seeded dislocations introduced by surface deformation improved damage tolerance in (001) β‐Ga2O3. Nanoindentation and characterization show dislocations suppress cleavage cracks by enabling stable plastic ...
