Abrasive Wear on the Atomic Scale

Physical Review Letters, 2002
A scanning force microscope in ultrahigh vacuum has been used to realize and detect atomic-scale abrasion on KBr(001). The continuous time evolution of the lateral force under scratching reveals that the wear mechanism is due to the removal and the rearrangement of single ion pairs.

ABRASIVE WEAR

2017
<div class="section abstract"> <div class="htmlview paragraph">An enormous economic loss, as well as a waste of natural resources, is incurred world-wide as a result of wear of components and tools. Any effort expended in an attempt to reduce this loss is indeed worthwhile.

Abrasive wear by paper

Wear, 1968
Abstract An engineering study of wear produced by data processing card stock is presented. Wear data was obtained for several different metals and geometries as well as for different loads and sliding speeds. These data were accumulated for amounts of sliding, from a few thousand feet of paper up to hundreds of miles. In addition, a model is proposed

On the abrasive wear of zirconias

Wear, 1997
Abstract Zirconia ceramics with different dopants, used to retain the tetragonal phase metastably, were evaluated to determine the effect of the difference in degree of transformability on the abrasive wear behavior. The abrasive wear tests, carried out on a multiple abrasive wear tester, showed that for two-body and three-body configurations the ...

Abrasive Wear

1969
Abrasive wear is one of the most critical and costly problems faced by an industrial economy. Since 1950 a great deal of empirical and theoretical knowledge has been developed, but impediments seem to exist which hinder the transfer of this information either among researchers or among those who have need of it. It is partially to remedy this situation

Abrasive Wear Of Intermetallics

MRS Proceedings, 1994
AbstractThe U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating the wear behavior of a variety of advanced materials. Among the many materials under evaluation are intermetallic alloys based on the compounds: Fe3Al, Ti3Al, TiAl, Al3Ti, NiAl and MoSi2. The high hardness, high modulus, low density, and superior environmental stability of these compounds make them ...
