Absorbing boundary conditions for granular acoustics

open access: yes, 2013
The boundary conditions of soft-sphere DEM are usually perfect reflectors of acoustic waves, leading to an unrealistic accumulation of energy. This situation is usually dealt with by global damping. In some situations, this solution is undesirable, so we present an alternative. If the grain-wall contact is made soft and dissipative, most acoustic energy

Evaluating a Pragmatic Strength Alternative for Frailty Measurement and Assessing Its Predictive Capacity Against Established Frailty Instruments in Rheumatoid Arthritis

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective Frailty occurs prematurely in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and is associated with poor health outcomes. We compared the performance of four frailty instruments, including a pragmatic alternative measure using chair sit‐to‐stand (STS), and evaluated their abilities to predict poor health outcomes.

Characterization of Defect Distribution in an Additively Manufactured AlSi10Mg as a Function of Processing Parameters and Correlations with Extreme Value Statistics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Predicting extreme defects in additive manufacturing remains a key challenge limiting its structural reliability. This study proposes a statistical framework that integrates Extreme Value Theory with advanced process indicators to explore defect–process relationships and improve the estimation of critical defect sizes. The approach provides a basis for

Laser Powder Bed Fusion of Alumina: Effects of Scanning Strategies on External and Internal Defects

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates how scanning strategies affect pure alumina in laser powder bed fusion. Linear 45° scanning yields uniform surfaces but high porosity, while the island‐concentric strategy provides higher density with through‐holes favorable for infiltration. Findings highlight pathways toward optimizing defect‐free alumina parts.

Two-Dimensional Simulation of Multiple-Acoustic-Wave Scattering by a Human Body Model Inside an Acoustic Enclosed Space

open access: yesApplied Sciences
This work presents the first study addressing two-dimensional numerical simulations of acoustic wave scattering involving a simplified human body model placed inside an enclosed cabin. The simulations utilise the µ-diff backscattering algorithm in MATLAB,

Adjoint-based optimization method for aerodynamic-stealth of aircraft considering the scattering characteristics of absorbing materials

open access: yesKongqi donglixue xuebao
With the continuous advancement of radar detection and counter-detection technologies, relying solely on stealth shaping can hardly meet the stealth performance requirements of advanced aircraft in a wide electromagnetic frequency domain.

Zein‐Based Adhesives: Sustainable Extraction and Application in Bioadhesive Technologies

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Zein is extracted from corn gluten meal using a simple and scalable process with high yield (~90%). The resulting protein is applied in bioadhesives modified with Ca2+ and Fe3+ ions, exhibiting substrate‐dependent adhesion. The findings demonstrate competitive bonding performance and highlight the role of ionic interactions in tuning adhesion ...
