VUV absorption spectra of water and nitrous oxide by a double-duty differentially pumped gas filter

open access: yesJournal of Synchrotron Radiation
The differentially pumped rare-gas filter at the end of the VUV beamline of the Swiss Light Source has been adapted to house a windowless absorption cell for gases. Absorption spectra can be recorded from 7 eV to up to 21 eV photon energies routinely, as

Interaction between Molten Al‐Killed Mn–B Steel and Carbon‐Bonded MgO Refractories Based on Recyclates

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
High‐temperature interactions between low‐sulfur Al‐killed Mn–B steel and MgO–C refractories (0 and 50 wt% recyclates) are studied via finger immersion tests (1600 °C). Surface‐active elements influence infiltration. MgO/CaS layer forms, along with spinel and calcium silicate.

Achievement of Sub‐Diffractive Detection Depth in Absorption Spectroscopy Using Excitation from an Upconverting Particle

open access: yesAdvanced Photonics Research
Conventionally, a collimated visible laser beam can only be focused to a transverse region volume with a waist of about 200 nm and an axial waist of about 1200 nm due to the wave nature of light.

Implicating the Contributions of Surface and Bulk States on Carrier Trapping and Photocurrent Performance of BiVO\u3csub\u3e4\u3c/sub\u3e Photoanodes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Monoclinic-scheelite BiVO4 has been widely studied as a promising oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst in artificial photosynthesis. Though significant progress to improve or augment its catalysis performance has been made, fundamental understanding ...

Zein‐Based Adhesives: Sustainable Extraction and Application in Bioadhesive Technologies

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Zein is extracted from corn gluten meal using a simple and scalable process with high yield (~90%). The resulting protein is applied in bioadhesives modified with Ca2+ and Fe3+ ions, exhibiting substrate‐dependent adhesion. The findings demonstrate competitive bonding performance and highlight the role of ionic interactions in tuning adhesion ...

High-Dynamic-Range Absorption Spectroscopy by Generating a Wide Path-Length Distribution with Scatterers

open access: yesPhotonics
In absorption spectroscopy, it is challenging to detect absorption peaks with significant differences in their intensity in a single measurement. We enable high-dynamic-range measurements by dispersing scatterers within a sample to create a broad ...

Inverse modelling on the basis of remote sensing to determine emission rates

open access: yesMeteorologische Zeitschrift, 1998
Inverse modelling with a Gaussian dispersion model is used to determine emission rates of diffuse sourees. The path-integrated gaseous concentrations of an exhaust are measured downwind of the source by FTIR absorption spectroscopy.

Influence of Sample Preparation and Processing Procedures on the Thermal Diffusivity of MgO‐C Refractories

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The thermal diffusivity of MgO‐C refractories is highly sensitive to sample preparation and processing procedures. In this article, the effects of coking sequence, machining conditions, structural inhomogeneity, and graphite coating application on measurements using laser flash apparatus are systematically investigated.

Identification of Hydrocarbons Characteristics Using Low-Power Laser Absorption Spectroscopy

open access: yesBiobacta Journal of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
This study presents an experimental investigation into the detection of hydrocarbons using low-power laser absorption spectroscopy at 532 nm. Oil–water emulsions (0–4% v/v) were stabilized with a surfactant and analyzed in transmission.
